On a recent trip I thought about buying a couple movies on iTunes to watch on the flight because I'd have no internet connection. But then I discovered this solution.
In this guide I'll show you how to find movies online. Download them to your iPhone and you'll be able to watch them when you have no internet connection. All done right on your iPhone.
These are the two apps we'll be using in this guide. Both are free in the App Store.
MoviesTube is an app that lists all the free full length movies that are on YouTube.
Movies are separated by genre.
While I admit this isn't the best app in the world because it's kind of slow loading. It is a one stop place to search for movies.
You'll notice that there are a lot of classic movies on YouTube. But there are also fairly new ones. You're not going to find any new release movies. But you can find fairly modern ones too.
For instance here's a pretty good movie Rudy. I happened to watch this one on my last flight. But here's how to download a movie to your iPhone for offline viewing.
First hit play on the movie to get it started. But we're not going to be watching it in this app. We're going to open it in the MxTube app.
When you try to open some movies in the MoviesTube app. You'll get this message. Just tap OK to continue.
The movie will begin to load. But you can pause it. Then look down and note the exact title of the video and who's account uploaded the video. In this case it was uploaded by "Crackle".
Now open the MxTube app and search for the exact title of the video. You'll know it's the right one when you find it because the title will match the account name.
Now you'll probably run into an error such as this one...
Or this one. Don't worry. It'll still work and you'll still be able to download/cache the video by tapping the "download" link in the upper right next to the settings icon (left of settings).
It'll ask you what video quality you want to download. Sometimes you have no choice but the lower the number the faster it'll load (smaller file) but the lower the quality.
Go into the Cache folder and you'll see the video downloading. Once it's finished downloading you'll be able to watch the video in the app even if you don't have internet connection.
To test it. Once the video is downloaded. Put your phone in airplane mode. Open the MxTube app and play the video.
If you cache to many videos in the app it could slow the app down. So if you ever have to delete one. Just left swipe it to delete the video from cache.
By the way. The Crackle YouTube channel has many full length movies. So check them out. Go in their playlists and you'll be able to find them by genre.
Also. Sometimes you'll run into an error message that says the video isn't available on mobile devices. Just cache the video anyway. It'll still play from the cache folder once downloaded.
Well I hope someone finds this helpful. It's not as good as Netflix or any other movies site or app. But if you'll be without internet it might come in handy to help pass the time. Enjoy!
