How to Spice Up an Old Shirt

by Niru S

Who says you fall in love just once? Pamper an old shirt or blouse with a makeover and try as much from falling in love with it once again!

Supplies

  • Shirt
  • Sheet of thick paper
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Old newspapers/ Plastic sheet
  • Acrylic paint - Black
  • Paintbrush/Sponge
  • Instructions

    Step 1

Pick a shirt that you've worn quite a bit and are bored of. I chose this oversized peach colored high-low shirt.

    Step 2

    Let's make a stencil!

    Step 3

Take a sheet of relatively thick paper and fold it into half. A thicker paper will not blot the paint in itself.

    Step 4

On one of the folded sides, draw one half of a heart (as I wanted to paint hearts on my shirt).

    Step 5

Cut along this drawing with a pair of scissors, and you will have the desired shape's stencil.

    Step 6

The fold will open into a symmetrical stencil like this.

    Step 7

Take some Acrylic paint and pour it into a palette (for a paintbrush) or a small dish (for a sponge). Do not add water to the paint as the shirt fabric will blot it and spread the color unevenly.

    Step 8

Place the shirt on a flat surface and be sure to keep lots of newspaper/a plastic sheet in between the front and back sides to avoid any leakage of paint onto the other side.

    Step 9

Place your stencil over the shirt.

    Step 10

Dip the sponge/paintbrush into the paint and dab it on the stencil while holding it in place, until the entire shape is filled with paint.

    Step 11

Repeat steps 8 & 9 all over the shirt and sleeves, placing the stencil as you wish!

    Step 12

Here's how the front side looks when it's done. I changed the stencil orientation a few times just for fun. Let the paint dry for 5 minutes.

    Step 13

Flip the shirt over and repeat the steps on this side, or leave it plain, if it suits you.

    Step 14

And Ta-Da! Watch it transform into this adorable shirt that you can't wait to flaunt!

    Step 15

And the back. I messed up one heart right there, but no biggie. ;)

    Step 16

Another one I made recently :)

    Step 17

Hope you enjoyed the guide. Love!
