How to Make Soda Bread With Raisins

by Huang Kitchen

This loaf of soda bread is wonderfully soft & moist. The raisins added make it so irresistible. It's best to make this bread the day before serving as it tastes best after sitting for a few hours.

  • 3 Cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 Teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 Cups buttermilk
  • ¼ Cups butter, melted
  • ½ Cups golden raisins, soaked in warm water, drained
  • Instructions

    Step 1

First preheat oven to 165 degree C (325 degree F).

    Step 2

Then grease a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan with melted butter or baking spray and set it aside.

    Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, add in the sifted flour.

    Step 4

Then add in the baking powder, sugar, salt and baking soda.

    Step 5

Using a whisk, mix all the dry flour ingredients together.

    Step 6

Then add in the soaked, plum raisins and mix them into the flour mixture. Set the mixture aside.

    Step 7

In a separate mixing bowl, lightly beat in one egg.

    Step 8

Then gradually add in the buttermilk.

    Step 9

Whisk the egg and buttermilk together until well combined.

    Step 10

Then pour the WET egg and buttermilk mixture all at once into the DRY flour mixture.

    Step 11

Using a wooden spoon or spatula, stir the batter until it's just moistened. Do not overmix.

    Step 12

Then stir in the melted butter. Blend the batter well but do not over mix.

    Step 13

Pour the moistened batter into the prepared loaf pan. Leave to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. This can create an airier loaf.

    Step 14

Then place the loaf pan into the preheated oven.

    Step 15

Bake for about 65 to 70 minutes until cooked through and a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.

    Step 16

Remove the loaf pan from oven to cool on wire rack.

    Step 17

Then remove the bread from loaf pan onto cooling rack.

    Step 18

Wrap the loaf with foil and set aside overnight for the best flavour.
