Bring 4 cups cold water to a vigorous boil.
Salt the water
Stir in grits (reduce heat to medium)
Stir for 2 minutes (to avoid lumps and so grits do not stick to bottom of pan)
Reduce heat to low and cover; continue to stir every 5 minutes
Grits will thicken...
Continue to cook on low while you make other breakfast or dinner items.
Add half and half to taste
Stir in half and half
Continue to cook; stir; cook
Add 3-4 tablespoons butter
Stir in butter
Ready to eat
