How to Make Homemade Bagels

  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 1.5 tbs sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 1.5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • Toppings
  • Instructions

    Step 1

    In a small bowl, place 1/2 cup warm water, sugar, and yeast. Do not stir and let it sit for 5 min. After the 5 min stir.

    Step 2

    In a large bowl, mix together the flours and salt. Create a well in the middle and pour yeast sugar mixture. Pour half of the remaining water into the well and mix.

    Knead for dough for ten min on a floured surface or 5 min with a bread hook.

    Step 6

    Lightly coat a bowl with olive oil and place the dough in it. Cover with a dish cloth and let it rise for about an hour in a warm place, until it doubled in size. Punch down cover again 10 min.

    Step 7

    Divide your dough into 8 equal pieces!

    Poke a hole in the middle to form into a bagel. Preheat oven to 425 and bring a pot of water with honey to a boil!

    Step 9

    Lower the bagels into the water with a slotted spoon. Let them boil for 45 sec.

    Step 10

    Brush each bagel with egg wash.

    Sprinkle with toppings and bake for 20min.
