How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookies

There is nothing like chocolate chip cookies made from scratch, fresh out of the oven!

Supplies

  • 2-1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup softened butter (2 - 4 oz. sticks)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (12 oz. package)
  • Optional - 1 cup chopped nuts
  • Cookie sheets
  • Cooling racks (if you have them)
  • Instructions

    Step 1

    Gather your ingredients (see specifics under Supplies).

    Step 2

    Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees F.

    Step 3

    Mix together flour, baking soda and salt in bowl.

    Step 4

    Melt butter in microwave or on stove top.

    Step 5

    Mix butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in another bowl.

    Step 6

    Mix together until it looks like this.

    Step 7

    Add eggs to butter mixture and beat until creamy.

    Step 8

    Combine the contents of the two bowls.

    Mix together until it looks like ...

    ...this!

    Step 11

    Now add in the chocolate chips.

    Step 12

    Fight the temptation to taste the batter. Or not. 😜

    If you want to add nuts (optional), do it now.

    Step 14

    Mix the batter well. Oops you got some on your finger - I guess you'll have to lick it off.

    Lightly grease cookie sheets with butter.

    Drop by rounded spoon onto baking sheets. You get to decide what size you want your cookies to be. These are bigger ones...

    These are smaller ones. Bake cookies for 8-11 minutes (depending on size) or until golden brown. Watch carefully - you don't want burned bottoms!

    Here's what the big ones look like coming out of the oven. Cool on cookie sheet for 2 minutes - they will continue to cook so remove to rack or plate to cool further. They harden as they cool.

    Best to transfer to a rack but if you don't have one, transfer from the cookie sheet to a plate.

    You can create tiny cookies or a giant one like this. You can press them down slightly for thinner, crispier cookies. Or leave them thick for chewier cookies.

    More coming out of the oven! Depending on cookie sizes, this recipe can make up to five dozen cookies. I made different sizes so there are about 3 dozen in this batch. Cookies harden as they cool.

    Big or small, thick and chewy or thin and crispy - so many yummy possibilities!
