Arepa is a traditional dessert from my country dominican republic. It is a sweetened cornmeal cake. It is absolutely delicious and not hard to make. Let me show you how i make it.

First things first: we must soak our cornmeal. This will expedite the cooking process. Soak it for about an 1hr. Add the cornmeal to a thick bottom pot. This prevents quick burning or sticking.

The second thing we must do is pry open our coconut. I first like to pierce  the eyes and take out the coconut water which is most of the time is sweet but other time rancid😒let's see how this goes.

Now for the fun part. Let's take all our stress out on this lil ole coconut. J/k this is how I break apart my coconut. You do it how ever way you want☺️

The third thing we must do is take some butter and grease our aluminum pans. Set it aside. I used 2 for this recipe. For best results use aluminum foil pans like the one shown.

Add the salt &the sugar. Add 1/2 cup of the sugar at first and taste to see if it is sweet enough for you. If not add a little at a time. You might not need the 1 1/4c. I personally like mine sweet.

Take the pot and set it over the stove burner on medium heat. We will stir this without stopping. If we stop our cornmeal will get lumpy and stick to the bottom of the pot.

Our batter is now ready. It is thick and creamy. When the batter is bubbly that's an indicator that it is done.

When your done pouring the batter in the pans we will put it in the oven for about an hour or until the top has browned.

The cake has cooked for an hour. It is now ready to be taken out. Let it come to room temp before cutting in to it take a piece. It needs to settle and firm up.
