Using a 1 inch drill bit. Drill holes evenly about 3/4 inch deep evenly spaced and covering the entire surface of the log. It helps to mark the spaces to be drilled with a black Sharpie first.
Using a drill bit with a diameter a wee bit smaller than the screw-in hook, drill a 2 inch hole into the top of the log.
Twist the hook to screw it tightly into the top of the log.
Cut the suet into 1 inch cubes. Transfer to a baking dish and allow to render in the oven at 250 degrees for 2-3 hours, until the fat is liquid. Strain the fat into a dish and cool til hardened.
In a mixing bowl, add the birdseed and suet. Mix well.
This is what the mixture should look like. Adjust amount of seed if needed.
Pack small chunks of the mixture tightly into all the holes. Freeze extra mixture to refill the holes when empty. Hang a chain from a tree and hook on the feeder. Then sit back and watch the birds.
