    How to scratch

    Step 5

Choose a picture, I like animals with fur for scratch art.

    Step 6

I used a simplified grid method to draw the picture on to paper, then covering the back with white chalk transferred the picture onto the scratch art board.

    Step 7

I also like to make a black and white copy in order to help me find the dark and light values.

    Step 8

Here you can see the chalked portions that have not been scratched and the gold portions that have been scratched. The chalk is easy to wipe off one you have finished scratching an area.

    Step 9

Scratch the lighter areas. This is opposite of what you would do in a drawing.

    Step 10

Hatching, cross hatching and stippling are techniques you use in scratch art.

    Step 11

Don't outline, unless you have a hard edged animal, furry animals don't require an outline.

    Step 12

Follow the hair length of the animal.

    Step 13

Here is a close up of some different scratching techniques.

    Step 14

To create different values, vary the distance between scratches.

    Step 15

    Cross hatched white value

    Step 16

Cross Hatching the ear creates a lighter value.

    Step 17

Student work, they choose to scratch the dark areas, instead of the light areas. I usually scratch the light areas, opposite of what you would do if you were drawing.
