  • Instructions

    Step 1

Computer Grafix comes in a variety of styles, but for this project, we are using the Matte Adhesive Backed Ink Jet Film. this product, layered over Chipboard, will make a nice, sturdy cover.

    Step 2

prep your composition book by using scissors or a metal ruler and exacto to remove both the front and back covers. LEAVE a portion of the spine in place.

    Step 3

here's what you should have when the covers have been removed. there is about a 1/2" to 3/4" piece of the spine remaining. this will keep the pages intact and make them easier to adhere in your cover.

    Step 4

here's a better view of the spine portion that remains after the covers have been removed.

    Step 5

measure the width and length of your pages, then add 1/4" to each measurement to get the size of the covers you will need.

    Step 6

open a folder where your pins are stored and select your faves for the cover. you may want to select more that you think you will be using in order to have a variety of sizes and shapes to work with.

    Step 7

click on pins and save them to your photo program.

    Step 8

store all your choices in a dedicated folder to make project easier.

    Step 9

open a new document in your choice of publishing program.

    Step 10

set size and margins using measurements from journal pages as a guide.

    Step 11

select the photos you would like to use, remember to pick more than you think you will need so you will have a variety of sizes and shapes to choose from when creating your collage.

    Step 12

drag and drop photos to page.

    Step 13

adjust sizes and placement of photos as you work to create your collage.

    Step 14

once you are happy with your collage save it, and print your cover out on a sheet of the Computer Grafix Matte Adhesive Backed Film.

    Step 15

printed page to be used to embellish your cover.

    Step 16

starting with a corner, remove a portion of the backing from the sheet to expose the adhesive.

    Step 17

start in a corner of the white chipboard and line up the corner of the page with it. DO THIS CAREFULLY! the adhesive is STRONG! once you have stuck it down, it is not easy to remove.

    Step 18

continue to pull on the corner of the backing sheet to expose more adhesive, while smoothing sheet down with your other hand. work slowly and carefully to avoid having air bubbles get trapped.

    Step 19

once the sheet has been applied cut the cover to size using the measurements determined earlier. KEEP IN MIND that a portion of the left edge will be covered by the binding tape and cut accordingly.

    Step 20

use your now cut to size front cover as a guide to cut back cover. you can line up on trimmer, or mark cuts first using a pencil.

    Step 21

cut a 1/2" spine piece the same length as cover pieces. if you would like a BIGGER book, you can make this wider and attach 2 or more composition books inside your covers (need wider binding tape)

    Step 22

cut a piece of book binding tape about an 1" longer than your spine piece.

    Step 23

attach the bookbinding tape to the left side of your cover, leaving about 1/2" excess hanging over top. the tape should extend about 3/4" onto the cover.

    Step 24

turn piece over and lay spine piece next to front cover leaving a small gap. make sure ends are even.

    Step 25

now lay back cover next to spine piece, again leaving a small gap.

    Step 26

turn ends of tape up on both at top and bottom.

    Step 27

turn assembled cover over and smooth and burnish tape down well so that it will be firmly adhered.

    Step 28

    assembled cover.

    Step 29

to finish off the inside of the front cover, select a coordinating piece of printed paper. we'll be using Artist-Tac to adhere it.

    Step 30

Artist-Tac is a dry adhesive that is easy to use and provides a very strong, secure bond. start by removing a corner of the backing.

    Step 31

line up the corner of the adhesive with a corner of the paper. and work as before, pulling on corner of backing to expose the adhesive and pressing and smoothing adhesive to paper as you go.

    Step 32

rub and burnish entire sheet to make sure all the adhesive transfers.

    Step 33

remove the backing to expose a corner of the now adhesive backed paper.

    Step 34

start in corner again and smooth paper down to inside of front cover. trim using scissors or an exacto knife and metal ruler.

    Step 35

you are now ready to add the pages to your journal cover. apply a generous line of glue along the spine piece left on the composition book pages.

    Step 36

line up and lay pages inside your cover, once happy with placement, close the cover.

    Step 37

press well along spine to adhere to the spine of your covers. you can check and make sure that you don't have any excess glue "ooze" to clean up inside book before setting it aside for glue to set.

    Step 38

add washi tape along the spine of the inside of your front and back covers to finish off the edges.

    Step 39

washi tape adhered to inside of front cover.

    Step 40

washi tape adhered to inside of back cover.

    Step 41

finished book! now all ready for you to fill up with your fabulous pins!
