First we DOWNLOAD!
Download GAMEPRESS by UNTITLEDD (FREE). Gamepress is now called hyperPad.
Time to create the game!
Open Game Press and tap CREATE.
Fill in the details of your game. Give it a NAME and a GENRE. You can also add some information about what it is about. Mine is called "Balloons."
Now give it a TYPE. It can be a top down game like Asteroids or a side scroller like Mario.
This is the interface of Game Press. Your tool pallet is on the left, your game objects are at the bottom, and your settings are at the top.
First we add some game props.
Tap one of the game object icons at the bottom to browse for more stuff you can use in your game.
Im looking for balloons. They are under miscellaneous.
I choose the red ballon.
To add the balloon to the game, just drag it from the bottom to the empty space above (this is your game window).
I put in some more balloons.
I also drug out this little CHARACTER.
I chose some GROUND also. The character will automatically collide with the ground.
I also added a BACKGROUND. Tap the PLAY BUTTON at the top of the screen to see how your game will look.
All the tools disappear and your game starts. But right now we can't do anything with these objects.
We have to give them BEHAVIORS.
Select the character. A side menu should pop up on the right side of the screen. To give it a behavior tap where it says BEHAVIORS.
This screen opens up. This is where you give objects behaviors. At the top are different categories of behaviors, and on the left are the behaviors. We are adding behaviors to the GREEN SPACE MAN.
We re under the GAME LOGIC behaviors. To add a behavior drag it from the panel on the left to the open space. Drag a JOYSTICK CONTROLLED and JUMP WITH BUTTON behavior into the empty space.
When you tap PLAY you get a button and a joystick. You can now move your character!
Select a balloon and click its behaviors button.
We are going to make the balloon detect when something collides with it, so drag a COLLIDED behavior to the empty space.
To choose what the ballon can collide with, tap where it says ANY OBJECT and a menu opens up on the right. Now tap where it says SELECT OBJECT.
This pops up. Choose the character (we want the balloon to detect when the character collides with it).
Now tap the CHECK MARK to confirm.
Now the ballon can collide with the green space man. When the two collide, we want the balloon to be destroyed. So drag a DESTROY OBJECT into the empty space.
To make the balloon destroy when the green space man collides with it, you just drag from the COLLIDED behavior to the DESTROY OBJECT behavior.
You can play the game if you want. When you touch the red balloon, it will disappear. We can also do other things when the balloon and green space man collide.
We can add effects!
Click on the FX category at the top.
Then click on the PLAY SOUND behavior.
Tap the play sound behavior and then tap where it says SELECT SOUND. A menu will come up where you can sample sounds. Choose one.
You can also connect this sound to the COLLIDED behavior so that it plays when the balloon and the green space man collide.
Also, under FX you can add PARTICLES. Tap START PARTICLES.
Tap the start particles behavior, and in the panel on the right choose SELECT PARTICLE.
Choose a cool one. I chose GALAXY.
You can also connect this to the COLLIDED behavior.
Now when you play your game and you touch the red balloon, a sound plays and you get a trail of blue pixie dust.
Finally we need some music for our game.
From the main screen tap where it says PROPERTIES.
Then tap WORLD BEHAVIORS at the bottom of the window that pops up. Yes, we can even add behaviors to the entire game world.
Under GAME LOGIC tap PLAY MUSIC.
Tap the PLAY MUSIC behavior and in the panel choose SELECT SOUND. Make it a good one.
You have just made the beginning of a basic game right on your ipad! Play around with the behaviors to make it more interesting.
