Start with the white side up. If the paper is double sided it doesn't matter
Fold in half diagonally, making sure to crease well. It's easier to fold on a hard surface, although professionals can fold in mid-air
Fold in half again, making a smaller triangle
Squash fold a flap by putting your finger into the corner (actually the middle of the whole piece of paper) and pressing flat the flap. Comment if you have problems with my not-so-good explanation
Do the same on the other side
Fold the edge in to the middle line.
Do the same on the other side. It should make a kite shape.
Fold the top triangle down. Repeat on the other side
Open up all five flaps
Open up the square, following the lines you just folded
Repeat on the other side (yes, origami is symmetrical; we always repeat things) Note: this picture is a side view so you can see what it looks like, so don't be confused.
Make sure the gap is on the bottom half facing you. Fold the sides in Silly me used patterned paper, so the photo (that I didn't put on) looked a bit hard to see. Hopefully the video will help.
Repeat on the other side
Flip the side open and fold the wing up. Crease well and repeat on the other side. Sorry the video is a bit wobbly; I was holding the phone between my knees.
Push pointy bit down to make a head. (This time don't repeat unless you want a double headed crane😂)
Fold the wing down to reveal the body, head and tail. Repeat. But we're not quite done yet!
Gently tweak the head and tail out. This is really optional, but I think it looks better.
Be very gentle here. Pull the wings out so that the body puffs up. Some people don't do this step, but I like to do it.
And we're done! Don't forget to comment if you have any questions!
