Separate the hair that you want to dread. I recommend a 1 inch by 1 inch piece. If you're doing a full head of dreads, you want the sectioning to be pretty uniform.

Apparently you don't have to have very dirty hair if you use a product like this. I would still advise that you skip a few washes and braid your section of hair the night before.

It's okay if you have little tendrils left over. Just wrap them around your little ball of back combed hair or palm-roll them in.

My make-shift crochet hook doesn't work, but the process is still the same. Your crochet hook should be pulling the hairs into your dread and tightening it up.
