How to DIY String Art

by Jenny Tran

This is a DIY guide on how to create string art

  • 1 Wooden Board (any size)
  • 1 Paint Brush
  • 1 Can of Wood Furnishing Stain
  • Embroidery Thread (Any Color)
  • Nails depending on your image size
  • Hammer
  • Wire ( I bought this, but didn't use it)
  • Instructions

    Step 1

    Gather all of the supplies

    Step 2

Stain the wood with whatever stain you want. You could also use acrylic paint. I wanted the rustic look so I chose to stain it

    Step 3

Tape your stencils to the board so they won't slide around. Use this time to lay them out exactly as you want them before doing anything else.

    Step 4

Nail Around the stencils. Don't nail the nails too close together. Use good judgment on how you want it to look. I used Copper Plated Weather Strip Nails size 3/4.

    Step 5

Remove the stencils. I had to use tweezers to pull the paper off. I also nailed over the paper in some parts, so it was kind of hard to remove the pieces that were stuck under the nail.

    Step 6

I chose to make my birds different colors. You can get any color embroidery thread you want. I tied a know of the string to one of the nails and started from there.

    Step 7

Wrap the strings whichever way you want. If you want a more defined look, then you can follow a pattern. Mine was just random. I also went around each bird twice to create the outline.

    Step 8

    This is my final product!
