How to Create a Winter Landscape. Option 1

by Michelle Sauer

Using the basic rules of one point perspective, we will create a tranquil winter landscape

  • Pencil & Eraser
  • Ruler
  • Tempera or Acrylic Paint
  • Bucket of water
  • Paintbrush
  • Instructions

    Step 1

Draw a horizon line across the paper and add a vanishing point near the left side.

    Step 2

Using the ruler and create 2 straight lines from the vanishing point to the edge of the paper.

    Step 3

Do this again below the first two lines that you drew. You should now have a total of four lines coming out of the vanishing point.

    Step 4

Place the ruler VERTICALLY on your paper

    Step 5

Create vertical posts for the fence. CAREFUL- you might want to make these lines diagonal- KEEP THEM VERTICAL!

    Step 6

Draw three trees that change in size. Erase the part of the horizon line that cuts through the trees.

    Step 7

Gather tempera paint, a brush, and water

    Step 8

Wet the brush and rub the brush on the paint

    Step 9

Using cool colors, paint stripes in the sky area. Be careful not to paint the trees!

    Step 10

Get a small amount of black tempera paint, a smaller brush, and water

    Step 11

Using a small brush, add texture on the birch trees

    Step 12

Using a smaller brush, paint your fence

    Step 13

Thin out the paint by getting water on your brush and just a little bit of paint

    Step 14

Using the thinned out paint, create shadows coming from the trees.

    Step 15

Still using the thinned paint, create a diagonal line starting at the vanishing point and ending at the bottom of the paper

    Step 16

Add the posts to the fence. Please set it on the drying rack to dry and you are ALL FINISHED
