How to Craft a Spin Drum Noisemaker

by Ben Franklin Crafts

You’ll be surprised at how this mini drum is constructed. Take it along with you to the 4th of July parade! Great big thanks to Ava, Charlie & Madyson who demonstrated the steps for this project.

  • 2 balloons
  • 1 decorative straw
  • 2 wooden beads
  • paint
  • duct tape
  • washi tape
  • 12 Inches baker's twine
  • Tacky Glue
  • Sharpies
  • Crop-d-dial or other heavy duty hole punch
  • paint cup
  • paper plate
  • small piece of sponge
  • scissors
  • empty masking tape roll
  • pencil
  • paper towel
  • small piece of wire
  • parchment or wax paper
  • Instructions

    Step 1

Squeeze a small puddle of paint into the paint cup. Place wood beads into the cup and use the sponge piece to roll them around in the paint.

    Step 2

Empty paint covered beads out onto the paper plate.

    Step 3

Lay a folded paper towel on top of the beads and roll around to blot off excess paint. This will help the beads dry faster!

    Step 4

Use heavy duty hole punch to make 2 holes directly across from each other, then a third hole half-way in between them. The third hole will need to be enlarged slightly - insert a pencil and twist .

    Step 5

Insert baker's twine through the holes that are directly across from each other.

    Step 6

Insert straw through remaining hole into a small puddle of glue. Apply glue around the base of the straw, also. (TIP: don't spin the finished drum for a couple of hours so the glue has time to dry!)

    Step 7

Here's an easy way to string your wooden beads on the twine. Fold the small piece of wire in half, then insert it through one of the beads. Put twine through the wire loop and pull through the bead.

    Step 8

Tie beads onto each end of the twine with a double knot. Trim twine close to the knot and put a dab of glue on each knot to secure. TIP: Be sure the beads will hit the drum surface before tying knots.

    Step 9

Use scissors to cut the neck off of each balloon.

    Step 10

Stretch a balloon over each side of the empty tape roll. This may require a little adult assistance!

    Step 11

Add a few pieces of washi tape to each side of the drum. Start by placing the tape in the center of the drum, then smooth outward toward the edges. Allow the extra tape to fold over onto the sides.

    Step 12

You will need two pieces of duct tape, each about 8" long to cover the sides of your drum. TIP: It's helpful to place the duct tape strips on parchment or wax paper so you can easily cut it to size.

    Step 13

Trim the duct tape strips so they are as wide as the side of your drum. Apply the first strip starting at the top. Make a vertical snip on each end of the duct tape so it will fit around the string.

    Step 14

Adhering the duct tape around the string.

    Step 15

Cut the remaining strip of duct tape in half the long way and stick to the bottom of the drum on each side of the straw. Some will stick to the straw, but you can scrunch it down with your fingers.

    Step 16

Use Sharpie markers to add detail to your mini drum noisemaker. Be creative! Use various colors and shapes to make it unique.
