How to Cook Brown Sugar, Bacon, and Apple Cider Turkey

by Katina N

A delicious turkey recipe I threw together for thanksgiving one year.

  • 1 Cup Apple cider
  • 1 Turkey
  • 3 Celery stalks
  • 5 Bacon slices
  • 6 Garlic cloves
  • 1 Onion, sliced
  • 7 Carrots, baby
  • 2 Green onion
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 2 ⅛ Tablespoons Brown sugar
  • Instructions

    Step 1

Take photos of the turkey packaging! This will save you later.

    Step 2

Side two of how to cook the turkey.

    Step 3

    Slice the onion

    Step 4

Chop up the 2 green onions and 3 celery stalks.

    Step 5

Chop up 5 cloves of garlic.

    Step 6

Chop up 8 baby carrots or 2-3 regular size carrots.

    Step 7

In the turkey dish, add almost all of the veggies. Save a little bit for inside the turkey cavity though.

    Step 8

Make sure your turkey is defrosted. I washed my sink and put the turkey in a hot water bath.

    Step 9

Once the turkey is defrosted enough, preheat the oven to 325 Fahrenheit.

    Step 10

Make sure you remove everything from the inside. In the neck, you will find the giblet pack and in the bottom you will find the turkey neck. I'm not using them, so I am putting them aside.

    Step 11

Add the turkey to the pans and add remaining veggies to inside the turkey.

    Step 12

Get 2 Tbsp of butter and soften it.

    Step 13

Lift the skin away from the meat on the bottom of the turkey.

    Step 14

Use a spatula and separate all of the skin away from the breast meat. Make sure you don't puncture the skin.

    Step 15

Add 1 Tbsp of butter underneath the skin. This will help the breast not overcook. Smooth the butter underneath all of the skin. I used the spatula to help.

    Step 16

Now put the other 1 Tbsp of butter all over the outside of the turkey.

    Step 17

Get your 2 tbsp of brown sugar ready. (I just recycled the butter bowl)

    Step 18

Evenly coat the entire turkey with the brown sugar.

    Step 19

Top the turkey with bacon. This will help keep the breast moist and not dried out.

    Step 20

Make sure to fold the wings under the turkey so they don't burn.

    Step 21

Pour apple cider into the pan with the turkey. Put at least an inch of apple cider in with the turkey. I believe this was around 2 cups for this turkey since it was rather large.

    Step 22

Ta-Da! Now your turkey is all ready to cook.

    Step 23

Cover the turkey with tin foil and follow cooking instructions. For my 17 lbs and unstuffed turkey, it says to cook 4-4 1/4 hrs. When an hour left, remove the tin foil so the turkey is golden brown.

    Step 24

Put the thermometer in the thigh to see if it is ready. It should read around 175. It says 180 on the instructions, but the turkey will continue to cook once you remove it from the oven.

    Step 25

After 10 mins, start carving the turkey.

    Step 26

Sit the table for a delicious dinner and enjoy! :3 happy thanksgiving.
