How to Clean Silver Jewelry Using Toothpaste

by Shayne 🎨

I use toothpaste to clean silver jewelry or anything silver. (I have silver cleaning solution but I rarely use it.) Toothpaste contains hydrated silica which is an abrasive and surface stain remover.

Supplies

  • Toothpaste
  • Paper towels or cotton cloth
  • Instructions

    Step 1

Here's a silver ring that my friend made. It's very tarnished...

    Step 2

Squeeze out a little bit of toothpaste. (My brushing preference is cinnamon (TMI?) but it works with whatever kind you have) Tartar control works the best since it contains the most hydrated silica.

    Step 3

Rub the toothpaste all over the ring. Just like you're washing it but instead of using soap it's toothpaste. I know it seems strange but it works.

    Step 4

Rinse all the toothpaste off and pat it dry.

    Step 5

That's a clean and shiny ring! If your silver still isn't shiny enough- just squeeze out more toothpaste and do it again.

    Step 6

Now I'm going to clean a silver cup.

    Step 7

What's that you say? You think it won't get clean unless I use smelly silver polishing chemicals?

    Step 8

Just a little dab of toothpaste...

    Step 9

Use a cotton cloth or paper towel and really massage the toothpaste in.

    Step 10

Look at all of the tarnish that came off!

    Step 11

Keep going! It takes a little work and a little more toothpaste.

    Step 12

Rinse it off and pat the it dry. Wow! I can almost see my reflection!

    Step 13

Who knew toothpaste could do this?
