I like to take things off the shelves and put them in a box so they don't touch my dirty kitchen floor. Plus it helps me remember what goes back on which shelf!
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO START AT THE TOP and work your way down. Otherwise you will have to re-clean shelves you have already cleaned! Honestly, I am just using regular windex to clean each shelf 1st.
If you are concerned about cleaners near your food, You could use organic cleansers. Otherwise, you can just use a rag and hot water. I do that 2nd, to pick up any leftover dirt and melt sticky stains
Everything goes in some sort of container in our fridge so I don't worry too much about what cleanser I use, but you can't be too careful these days, I'm sure. Continue to work your way down.
I do the outer shelves first because I hate doing them and they take the longest. Once I get inside my fridge it goes a lot faster and is easier!
If you are worried about wasting electricity, you could turn your fridge temp up to try and keep the fan from turning on. Or if you are going to do your freezer too, you could empty it and unplug it.
Hopefully your shelves come out- so much easier to clean both sides! As you are putting things away, you can check expiration dates; if you use baking soda to deodorize, check that date too!
Now is a great time to reorganize! Move things forward that need to be used first, move long lasting things towards the back, and make sure everything is visible so you can find it!
Don't forget to remove your crisper drawers and meat drawer! My fridge is old and I can't put anything in the dishwasher (it all needs to be cleaned by hand) but if you can, you could save some time.
Clean under the drawers! I don't know how stuff gets under there but it does!
In the very back of my fridge there is a ledge that gets gross and crummy, I have to lift up my bottom shelf to get to it!
You can't see that very well but it is one of the things that holds my fridge shelves. They get gross and need cleaning too!
Now is a great time to pull out the vacuum and get that vent! Otherwise that area gets REALLY gross, where the door seals itself shut (you should clean all around the door seal on both sides!)
Voila! A clean fridge. If you don't want to sweep your floor, you could always line the floor with a dish towel so you can catch any falling crumbs or dirt. This took me about 20 minutes total to do.
