How to Build a iPhone Dock With Speakers and Charger

I wanted to build a iPhone charger and speaker for my daughters new room and phone. I used hand tools and very basic woodworking skills. I was a bit surprised at sound quality of natural speakers.

Supplies

  • Block of wood
  • Electric drill
  • Drill bits
  • Roto zip or dremel
  • Sand paper
  • Sanding block
  • Tape measure
  • Rasp
  • Hot glue gun
  • Danish oil
  • Small grinding wheel
  • Sander
  • Steel wool
  • Safety glasses
  • Mask
  • Clamp or workbench
  • Instructions

    Step 1

    Buy your favorite wood see craft store or hardware store.

    Step 2

    I went with poplar it was light and easy to work with.

    Step 3

    Sand with hand or use sander go with grain of wood.

    Step 4

    Not much grain to see but really smooth.

    Step 5

    Set up a mock up of what you want to build. I found the silver grommets to give a finished look.

    Step 6

    Lay out your cuts with pencil on wood.

    Step 7

    Mark iPhone size think small easier to enlarge later.

    Step 8

    Drill speaker holes

    Step 9

    Clean up with roto zip /dremel or router .

    Step 10

    Test fit

    Step 11

    First pass with roto zip go slow and take a little bit off at time.

    Step 12

    Note small increase.

    Step 13

    Test fit again.

    Step 14

    Drill holes for speakers into speaker cavity (see small black holes next to charger)and drill hole for charger.

    Step 15

    Bottom of charger cord.

    Step 16

    Test fit then hot glue in place.

    Step 17

    Check it out, I was surprised at sound increase from speaker cavity connections.

    My 14 year old daughter loves the retro look and how it sounds. She is pretty proud of her dad.
