How to Use Google DNS for Faster Web Browsing

3.5k Views
Step 1 of 12

I gave this a try because my iPhone 4 is slower than my 3GS with a wifi connection. It seemed to help so I figured I'd pass this find along.

Step 2 of 12

Every time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading.

Step 3 of 12

So your computer or iPhone browser may be performing hundreds of lookups a day. By using Google Public DNS you can Speed up your browsing experience and improve your security.

Step 4 of 12

To use this we'll have to change your wifi connections DNS number. But before we do that let's save your current DNS number so you can change it back if you want to.

Step 5 of 12
Go to settings then Wifi.

Go to settings then Wifi.

Step 6 of 12
Tap the blue arrow next to the wifi connection you're using.

Step 7 of 12
Scroll down and copy your DNS number to your clip board.

Step 8 of 12
Then past it in a your notes. This is just so you can change the DNS number back if you want to later. So what I'm about to have you try is reversible. So no worries. :)

Step 9 of 12

Before we make the change. Go to a couple of website and note how fast they load. Then compare it to how fast they'll load after you set it to google DNS.

Step 10 of 12
Now go back to the wifi setting and change the DNS number to this. 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 it must be exact. Notice there's a comma then a space in the center.

Step 11 of 12

Once you have changed this setting, you can safely go back to the previous screen and press the Home button. It may vary on the speed increase. But I do notice a difference when pages load.

Step 12 of 12
Now browse some websites. See if you notice any speed increase. Let me know how it turns out for you. You can read more about the google DNS online.

Does this mean google will now have even more info on you for marketing and selling your info based on the pages you visit if you use their DNS?

Yolanda. No it won't effect anything else. Basically google DNS caches sites for you. So your browser doesn't have to. Which equals faster page load. But it won't effect anything else.

Carmine. I never had that issue. I'd suggest going to the google dns page and look into it. You can find it by searching google dns. Sorry I don't have more help to offer.

I think this is an awesome ideal. I do understand you said I can change bk to the original DNS Pg. But will it effect anything else from operating the proper way?

No matter what I do, following your instructions or trying anything else the DNS reverts back to my original DNS. Is it supposed to do this?

You're almost right. I used art studio. Added a layer of black over the image. Lowered the opacity of the black layer. Then cut out the section I wanted to highlight with feather (see my guide on selection tool).

Hussain Kadhim

Before you answer, i THINK that you gone to artstudio, took a tool and black color, and then lowered opacity, colored all black, and using that spray thing you colored low opacity white?, you could make a guide on that highlighting, i really wanna know how :/
