How to Tie Your Shoes (So They Never Come Untied)

I hate when my shoes come untied. This variation on the traditional knot will fix that problem and looks much better. @stylewithjoshua

As a kid, we were all taught how to tie our shoes incorrectly. Never fear...I'm here to help.

This part is right. You should feel good about yourself.

And this is right. 2 for 2, partner.

And this is where it all goes wrong. We were taught to take the lace down and around the bow.

You wrap it around and pull it through....

....and get this. First, it's ugly. The bow should sit across the shoes, not up and down it. Second, this is the weak form of the knot. It will frequently come untied causing people to double-knot it.

And instead of going beneath the knot, loop around the top

Step 9 of 11
And "pull it through" the same way. Your hand holding the first bow will change positions to pull the new loop through the hole. Your other hand can grab the first loop and hold it tight.

Step 10 of 11
Voila. A bow that rests laterally on the shoe. Looks better and it's a stronger knot. You can do this with dress shoes, tennis shoes...you name it.

this can be achieved the same way by switching the way you loop in "step 2". instead of looping one lace over the other, change it so the other lace loops over the other. (if you know what I mean). the idea is to switch the way you loop (only for one of the loops). eh I can't explain this.

Been doing this forever. Couldn't for the life of me finger out how "most" people have been doing it based on these steps, though.

This is how they should be tied. I think the problem has come about by left handed people teaching right handed people and vice versa and often 'mirroring' by sitting opposite the learner when showing how its done. Once upon a time children learned knots, tying off etc on other things on a frequent basis with the teacher at the side, long before owning shoes with laces. Early shoes had buttons and they never came undone.....but would occasionally 'ping' to freedom, never to be seen again!

I have used this method since I saw it on Regis 24 years ago and it works like a charm. I don't even know how to tie them the old way!

I make two loops instead of one, and don't have an end "lace" to go around with. They tie lateral, and I've never had them come loose. :)

Alicja Sobczak

I always do laces same. Same as you described, but some shoe laces are evil! and no matter how strong and good your knot is they will untie. But, how about when you have one loop and while working on the second one you will take the first and go around twice instead of one as you normally do. I wonder if that will do the trick. :)

Rather than adjusting the 'around-the-loop' step, for some (myself included), it's simpler to change which lace is in front for the initial cross-over. If you start right over left and the bow comes out wrong, start left over right, and finish the rest the way you've always done it. Your bow should lay across.
