Have your dog sit directly behind and about two feet away. Call his name for attention.
Step 2 of 9
With a treat in your hand lean over and show him the treat. Use the cue peekaboo.
Step 3 of 9
Use the treat to lore her through your legs. Keep the treat close to her nose. Use the cue.
Step 4 of 9
To bring him into position allow him to nibble on the treat.
Step 5 of 9
Have her hold the sit and look at you before giving the reward.
Step 6 of 9
Introduce the the hand signal (Hands on Hips) once your dog moves freely under you. As he begins to move on the hand signal eliminate the cue and lure.
Step 7 of 9
Practice and patience and your dog will be able to play peekaboo from across the room or yard. Be sure to add some distractions. Attention is important so call your dogs name before giving hand cue .
Step 8 of 9
Let's take a look at the teaching sequence and the trick. If you want your dog to stand rather than sit hold the treat level with his nose rather than lifting it up.
Step 9 of 9
Go ahead teach your dog this trick and be sure to take Bubba's advice and have some fun while you do it. See you next time.
I am a retired West Chester University professor. My passions are working with my dog, cabinetmaking, cooking, and teaching.
I hope you enjoy these guides.
I would suggest you begin a routine of walking and less food. When you treat I would suggest very small pieces of natural balance rolls and figure out how much of a meal it will substitute for.
Jove must have known so he started on his own to paw us if someone is at the door, or if my husband "famously" forgets to turn off the water or garbage disposable, Jove paws dad and Jove shows him what he forgot to turn off... We have special alarms to wake us... If power shuts electricity off, Jove paws me very gently and wakes me up... Then I wake my husband up... He's a natural and our biggest baby ever!!!! We L-O-V-E LOVE Jove and he knows it!!! 😍
Emlyn, our Chocolate lab, Jove (e is silent) but he absolutely LOVES going under daddy's legs for ear rubs, neck, et rubs and if stopped, Jove will 'nudge' to say, no daddy, you are no where near done with me!!! Go on, lots more rubs please!!! Lol! So that's his peek-a-boo for my husband! How funny!!! Btw, his name is the abbreviation of Jupiter, Roman God of thunder/lightning. Jove has a white lightning mark on his chest. Labs that have such marks are automatically disqualified from being able to be a show dog. That's perfectly fine by us!!! He's the BEST hearing ear dog we've ever had. A co
Mara, you said, "My fat dog loves food & will do anything for a treat." I think Emlyn will agree with me here... It is not healthy nor is it 'cute' to have an overweight dog. A healthy dog should always be in it's appropriate weight range. It is extremely challenging for dogs to lose weight. It sounds like the dog isn't walked. Sounds like the dog is sedentary and whenever there's food, ask yourself why he only comes around when there's food. Sounds like he wants the attention he really needs. But to quiet him, it's just easy to give treats. Someone in the family will need to step up and start SLOWLY taking the dog for one on one walks... When he gets his energy back, bring him to a dog park. Always bring plastic baggies, and LOTS of water as well as a waterproof foldable dog water bowl. I highly recommend you first bring him to the vet just to make sure there's no underlying issues before someone pursues any exercises with dogs that do not normally go on walks, et.
My suggestion would by not to look, talk, or touch him until he settles down. If he jumps on you turn away from him and keep doing it until he settles down.
Your parents are right about it being a big responsibility. You have to exercise him/her every day, feed him twice a day, train and work with him daily, clean up after him, and groom him at least once a week. For that you will get his/her love and devotion. As far as you not being capable of taking care of one you have to find a way to prove you can. :)
I have a year old Jack Russell and when I let him out in to the garden he just doesn't stop barking. I'm afraid to let him out now because the neighbours might complain (they haven't yet). Should I put a muzzle on him when I let him out? Is there any chance we can swap dogs - your dog gorgeous!
