How to Stop Your Dog From Biting

3.4k Views
Step 1 of 7

This only works if the dog is only playfully biting. If the dog is biting to hurt you, then you may want to seek help from a obedience school or maybe a dog trainer.

Step 2 of 7

First step: if you are playing with you dog and they start to bite, first tell them no in a loud and stern voice.

Step 3 of 7

Now waggle your finger in the dogs face or, if it is big problem, clap near their face.I don't like to do that to my dog because it scares him, but if biting is a big problem, its the most effective.

Step 4 of 7

Next step out of the room and ignore the dog for about two minutes, and tell your family members or roommates to do the same.

Step 5 of 7

Once you do this you can go back to play with them! :) but you have to do this continuously when they bite until they understand.

Step 6 of 7

This is what my vet told us to do, I know it sounds kind of harsh but it does work :)

Yes, that is why I do use the clapping sometimes when he starts biting a lot, but my dog is a huge scaredy cat haha and gets very scared from loud noises :)

He looks so sweet!! Thanks for sharing! I have been using a different method but yours sounds like it might work faster.

p.s. This dog is also now a therapy pet who visits seniors. He absolutely cannot put a tooth on a person, even in play. He doesn't.

I have a dog training business. You are describing "bite inhibition." Want an alternate solution that is a little friendlier? (This was a big issue with my cattledog puppy--he would often grab and rip my clothes and I only wanted to use positive reinforcement methods with him. I don't rely on the word "No," I reward good behaviors and he is my trick dog who must have full trust that he won't be hurt. Most vets are not schooled in behavior or training. Or, if they are, it's old punishment-based methods). First, I didn't allow people to roughhouse with this dog. He needed help being calm in life; firing him up was not the goal. If they are pups, you can count on them having times of the day when they are wild. We call it the "puppy witching hour" (usually around 6 p.m.) Instead of a shirt or pants, I would keep soft toys around to hand to him instead. On walks, I would carry a towel with knots in it to hand to him instead of my pants legs. He would tug and pull to his heart's content. If he was too wild, I would put him in his crate for about an hour with something great and longlasting to chew on. Dogs need to chew to exercise their gums and teeth. When he would calm down, he could come out again. We played 'appropriate' games of tug with toys. If you want to know more, check out my blog "saranimals" (wordpress). Ask questions if there is something I can help with or a specific thing you would like to train your dog. My goal is to have people LOVE their dogs instead of feeling at war with them. I used to flip my dogs in the nose for biting...no more. :) Cute, cute dog you have!
