My favourite knife to use for this is a victorionox serrated edge knife, but everyone has their favourite knife. Use what you feel comfortable with!

Cut off the root, stay as close to the root as possible as we want this end to hold the onion together later!

You need to know which is the root end. It's on the left in this pic.

Place the onion flat with the root end to the left. If your left handed you need it on the right

So you see you cut as far as you can without slicing completely

Just a little addition to your guide if you don't mind. Most people tear up when chopping onions. Chewing gum has always prevented this for me. It's never failed me.

Yes that is another way of doing it! I don't tend to as I think I'm so used to onions as a chef but that is very true re tears! :-)

I've been told to leave the root in tact for as long as possible. Apparently the tear gas is mostly stored there. Do you get teary doing this?
