Dip the small paintbrush in acetone and use it to erase the white polish until the tips are the width you want and have a smooth edge. Dab off excess polish and acetone on a paper towel.

Just did this now, turned out great! It really helps being able to paint the white in long strokes (since you will be erasing part of it anyway), it makes it smoother and more even. I found an old makeup brush and used the only nail polish remover I had, non acetone, but still came out lovely...
