The reason for this is because using location services demands a lot of battery. This also prevents apps from knowing your location and personal info at any time.

A big battery killer is the option to use cellular for iCloud documents. Go to settings>general>cellular>turn off iCloud documents option. There is a bug that has the phone always using cellular data for this. BTW this is an iOS 6 issue for all versions of the iPhone.

You need to let people know that having the GPS, Bluetooth ad wifi off will be the biggest things that help battery life. Only turn on the functions you need when you need it.

I hope this helps things go a bit faster for you setting things up than they did for me, cause I know you'll be anxious to play with your new toy! (Rightfully so!) I'd Definately say its worth the upgrade if you can afford it. I'd also suggest making sure you lean towards more memory, because as you find all the cool things it can do and how it's even easier to use, the last thing you want to do is run out of space! Good luck and be safe when you're out there driving! Happy thanksgiving!

One piece of advice to all, Make sure that your old phone is properly synced, backed up, and purchases/settings/saved data have successfully transferred (yes, there are 3 different tasks) to iTunes, before you connect your new phone to your computer so you can properly restore your settings etc.. And when you so plug in your new phone, when it asks you to select restore phone or new phone, don't pick new phone! Also, there's an update waiting on the new phone, and it will try to interrupt the sync to update. Do not allow this!! It will cancel whatever you have left to sync, do it after you're done. Note that songs need to be moved from music(on your computer window of iTunes) to your phones music(different window in iTunes). Do this by going to edit on the screen with the music, selecting 'select all', right click over highlighted text, click copy. Go to your phones music window, right click and hit paste.

The battery on the the iPhone 5 is far superior to the life it has on the iPhone 4S!! On top of 4g LTE making wireless faster, and way more processing power (substantially faster doing everything!), It also has cool new stuff all over the place. Maps is a lot better! It works more like an actual GPS, giving accurate location and distance from next turn(turn right in .5 miles. Turn right in 500ft.). Also, automatically rerouting if you miss a turn. I only wish it'd have the same plug as the older models so you wouldn't have to buy new accessories.. They do have adapters (one that's corded, and the other just a simple plastic addition that's smaller than the wall plug,)

Also, make sure you close running apps periodically by double-tapping the home button, press and hold one of the icons, and tap the red (-) to close the app.

iPhone 5 battery life is great. You might have a defective battery if you have to charge it that much @stephanie. I am a moderate to heavy user also I can go 24 hr easy with one charge.

Go to settings, general, cellular, then turn off LTE. My battery lasts 5 times longer with that turned off.

Edwin Tofslie

This also is for those on iPhone 4 phones who upgraded to iOS6.

Edwin Tofslie 7 months ago

Edwin Tofslie

Correct Ian. Modern charging systems are very smart and have over charging prevention and will not effect your battery life.

Edwin Tofslie 7 months ago

Ian Laird

@Mel, I'm pretty sure that's a fallacy. As long as you don't leave it on the charger for more than 12 hours at a time, you should be fine. Even if you were to leave it on the charger for longer periods of time, there's a setting in the phone which prevents it from over charging and frying the battery - with newer phones especially. I plug mine in when I go to sleep, and my battery life has remained the same for years.

Ian Laird 7 months ago

Charging over night will burn the battery making it not last longer

Stephanie, I used to do the same thing, but then I tried this and now I only charge at night.

Therese, the iPhone 5 is supposed to have a better battery, but it also runs so much more in the background. This along with constant location checks make it drain extremely fast.
