First step is too preheat your oven to 375 F.

Get a bowl out for mixing all your ingredients up.

I prefer this glass one. It has a lid for storing the dough if I want to only make a few cookies at a time. ;)

Next step is to add your ingredients into the bowl. My mom didn't have an order in which to do this but I say add the wet first, then the dry.

First I cut 3/4 cup of a shortening stick and dropped it into the bowl.

Then I added the four tablespoons of molasses. ;)

At this point, mix together the ingredients added so far.

Add in the 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.

Time to mix the rest of the stuff together.

Add in about 1/8 cup of water just to moisten it a little. ;)

Added the water and its moist enough to roll in balls now.

Pour some sugar in a bowl, roll a ball of dough, and roll it in sugar.

Then put your rolled ball onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Add more balls until full.

Now the cookies need to bake for 10 minutes so set your kitchen timer.... and dance around to your favorite music, go outside and get some fresh air, or sit down and put your feet up ;)

Before you pull them out of the oven, get your cooling rack ready ;)

Pete, these are soft right out of the oven but it really depends on what kind of shortening you use. If you use butter, they might turn out crispier. My mom used Crisco for everything, but I like to use REAL butter instead of fabricated fat from "vegetable oils". Anyways, I will making a Snapguide on our Owen Family recipe Gingie cookies ( thick soft gingerbread cookies that go well with a tall glass of cold milk) in a couple weeks, so look for that because we have made them for over 25 years and they truly are THE BOMB!!! (:
