Great guide, I live in Devon, UK. we don't get these green tomatoes in our local markets so I'll grow some 'beef' tomatoes and start picking when they are still green. May be a bit of a long wait but why not! Like Petri de Pita it's reminded me of the movie.

These are just unripe red tomatoes! I'm a southern girl from Mississippi and its a common dish that we love. To make it more healthy do this: same recipe but instead of frying, spray both sides with olive oil/ PAM and bake at 450 for 10 to 15 mins depending on how thick u cut the tomatoes, turning when they are brown. You can make them southern creole' or tex mex or classic. Great ith a slice of bacon on a salad or sandwich!

Can anyone please tell me if those green tomatoes are a special type or they are regular red tomatoes that didn't ripe yet? I come from Romanian and in the autumn we pickle green tomatoes ( red ones not ripe yet). Now I live in England and here I have bought green tiger tomatoes, they are as small as cherry tomatoes and they look nothing like the ones in this guide. If anyone has an answer for my question please help me... For Fred, great guide as always, lovely market pictures 😊

I'm not a cook much less a good one. I just know the one time I had them they were served with this amazing sauce that I have now been told was a remoulade. I ended up licking the bowl long after the tomatoes were gone. But thanks for sharing with me. just me t

A good southern cook would never serve fried green tomatoes with anything on them.

Petri de Pità

Tartar, cocktail, remoulade, buttermilk, up to your taste Terri 😄, I would go with lemon tartar sauce.

Petri de Pità 11 months ago

Terri Dahlgren

Anybody know what kind of sauce you serve with them??

I love fried green tomato! Do you make any kind of dip? Here in FL I've always had a dip, ranch dressing type or my favorite, a dill dip.

Fried green tomatoes are better fried with cornmeal. Leave then in salt at least 30 minutes and drain as much liquid as possible. Dredge in corneal and fry in pan until dark golden brown. So easy!

These are a very popular southern side dish! I have always used fish fry for extra crunch. Green tomatoes also make a great substitute for apples when making pies.

Fried green tomatoes get soggy. Try a wire rack you'll be surprised. And you can "nook" in the microwave on reheat. But not the limit of time, pause and check.

For salt intake and health? Lay off too much salt. Your a great cook. Looks delicious. Thank you. You have shown me a different way of slicing instead of just slicing straight. I guess people in the south are saving time but not a lot. Thank you again.
