My Sicilian grandmother made French toast this way - dipping bread into the eggs and milk separately. The texture is totally unique - soft inside and crunchy on the outside.
Put milk in one bowl and the two eggs in another bowl
Step 3 of 9
Whisk the eggs along with the sugar and cinnamon. Sometimes I also add a dash of vanilla.
Step 4 of 9
Cut your bread. I like to use French or sourdough bread. This recipe works great for stale bread because the milk softens it up.
Step 5 of 9
Melt the butter in the frying pan.
Step 6 of 9
First dip a slice of bread in the milk and then in the egg mixture. Then cook in the pan.
Step 7 of 9
Cook...
Step 8 of 9
...until golden brown and then flip over.
Step 9 of 9
Serve with the usual French toast toppings -sugar (powdered or granulated), jam, fruit, and/or maple syrup. I hope you enjoy the unique flavor and texture.
I love to create! All kinds of things. Food, crafts, jewelry, art, photos, theater, events, history, social justice. My proudest creation is my daughter!
You can use any bread. I've done this with whole wheat but dipping in milk does make the bread soggy so you just need to be careful that the bread doesn't fall apart.
