You can locate most of the ingredients for this recipe at a health food store. Check your local farmers market for the beeswax.
Using a knife or a grater, measure 2 ounces of the beeswax. If you have an electronic scale, place your Pyrex measuring cup on the scale, and zero it out. Then add the beeswax.
Add 1 cup of organic olive oil.
Add a half cup of organic coconut oil.
Create a double boiler by placing the Pyrex measuring cup in a pot of water. Slowly melt the mixture over medium heat.
The wax and oils will slowly melt and combine. Don't cover with a lid while heating, as it will create condensation, which can ruin the salve. It's ok if condensation gathers on the outside.
When the beeswax has completely melted, remove from the burner.
Vitamin E oil has excellent moisturizing and scar-reducing properties. It also extends the shelf life of your salve because it is an antioxidant.
Add 1 Tablespoon of the Vitamin E oil, and mix.
Essential oils provide a pleasant fragrance, in addition to positive medicinal effects and aromatherapy. For example, lavender essential oil is said to be a soothing antiseptic.
The essential oil you choose, and how strong a scent you would like, will inform how much to add. For lavender, about 25 drops works for me. Stir vigorously.
While still warm, pour into containers. Let sit, uncovered, overnight.
After sitting out all night, the salve will have turned a nice yellow color and firmed up. Place tops on the containers, and store in a cool dry place.
This salve is quite thick. It works great on extremely dry and rough skin. Though it might feel a little greasy right when you apply it, it sinks into the skin beautifully!
