Great guide Saleh! Natasha, you can make the hummus without tahini, I have made it before using Saleh's recipe (without hummus). I don't remember if I added any water as I made it about 3 years ago, but j had no tahini at that time and it was still delicious! Good luck!

Hi Natasha, Well, you can always order it online! Let me tell you that the real stuff is WORTH it! You can even make it at home by toasting 2 cups of seasame seeds just until it begins to be aromatic and smells good. Then put it while still warm in a food processor with 1 TBSP veg oil and 1 tsp salt. Blitz untill it is smooth and creamy, might need to scrape the sides of the food processor 1 or 2 times. Others have mentioned that you could use peanut butter or any other nut butter in place but I never tried that. I reckon if you look for it in middle eastern specialized markets or even a health food store then you might find it.

Am I ever going to find classic tahini in America? I crave traditional arab hummus here so much. I really want to try this. Can you give me an alternative to tahini?

It really is yummy! Sumac is a type of deep red berry which gets dried and ground up into a powder. It is quite tangy and tart, but so good! Try looking for it in middle eastern markets or the ethnic isle in your supermarket. You will also probably find it online. I don't think there's another name for it, or if there is then I dont know it, I'm sorry :( In this recipe, we only use sumac as a garnish so you can leave it out or use another ingredient such as red chili powder. It will give u a nice spicy heat.

Sounds yummy! Is there another name for sumac? I'm not familiar with it. Thanks!

The tahini you use here looks different from the one I've seen in the store, your's looks much thinner. But I will go ahead and buy it 'coz your recipe makes me crave hoummos!

Hmm, peanut butter instead of tahini! I never tried it as a sub for tahini but it might work well! You could always make your own tahini, I saw it as a guide before in this app!

Tahini is wonderful but difficult to find. If you are desperate, I've substituted peanut butter for the tahini in my hummus. Nobody was the wiser.

Tahini is a seasame paste, in the USA you can find it in middle eastern supermarkets or the ethnic isle in your supermarket. You can also find it in speacialty health stores and ofcourse you can try finding it online. It's a paste from seasame seeds, it's bitter but nice and creamy and gives a delightful flavor to middle eastern foods.
