How to Make a Ring Out of a Quarter

Yes, you can make a ring out of a coin and its frowned upon to do this to money so do it at your own risk! I lost my pictures of my own process from a while back. Not all images are mine! Good luck!

Step 1 of 17
Obtain a silver coin. If you are using a U.S. coin, you need to use one from 1964 or earlier. (More recent coins are not made of silver)

Step 2 of 17
Tap the coin down to a smaller diameter while widening the edge. Hold the coin on edge between your thumb and finger and tap it with a hammer (or large spoon) against a hard surface.

After 10 or 15 minutes of work, tapping and turning the coin on its edge, the reeding on the edge should disappear and the edge will get wider. Don't rush through this or will cause the ring to deform

Put the coin into a vice so you don't have to hold the coin because it gets really hot. Drill a hole in it and let it get "hung up" on the drill bit. Go over with 200 grit sand paper.

@Adam look below, that is not opinion. Plus you've already met me virtually so don't be a defeatist.

Megan L 5 months ago

Megan L

@Adam Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States code provides criminal penalties for anyone who fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States. This statute means that you may be violating the law if you change the appearance of the coin and fraudulently represent it to be other than the altered coin that it is. As a matter of policy, the Mint does not promote coloring, plating or altering U.S. coinage: however, there are no sanctions against such activity absent fraudulent intent. You Americans should learn a little more about where you come from, shame on you. Although this ring is ok as long as it is not sold or generally shown or seen in public or by the police. So if anyone had a huge stash of these in their shed the police would arrest you for fraud. Americans should be forced to study law, some of you have no hope.

As far as other countries I cannot say. Their laws may be very different. And just because the police aren't out hunting down jewelry makers to be sure they aren't using coins doesn't mean that if you tried to sell said coins you wouldn't be penalized. It's rude and uncalled for to tell people from other countries that their concerns are mere paranoia and/or unbased. Can everyone please, please, PLEASE stop talking about this now.....

Rane Body Decor 5 months ago

ℐuβ„“β…ˆ@ L

I never knew that it was illegal in Australia, I saw a pretty defaced coin once

ℐuβ„“β…ˆ@ L 5 months ago

Rane Body Decor

The issue is not that you would get arrested for making a ring out of a quarter. It's in the instance that you take a quarter and try to alter it to make it spear to be a gold dollar. Or more commonly, take a 5$bill and bleach/reprint it to spear to be a 100$bill. The same way that you may buy painted liberty dollars on hsn or write whereswashington.com on you dollars, you may indeed, in the united states, alter your coinage to be jewelry with complete legality. What you cannot do is turn it into a ring and then try to use it to pay for your newspaper, claiming its a half dollar.

Is it illegal to damage or deface coins? Elizabeth, yes they can still be used enen though production of them has stopped. However, all after-tax prices end in a multiple of 5 because the nickel is now the lowest coin currently being processed.

Serene Snapguider 5 months ago

Heather W

Ron, here in Canada pennies are not even made anymore for that reason.

Heather W 5 months ago

Ron Jaxon

Actually today that makes sense. Because many US coins cost more to make than their face value. For example a US penny cost about 2 cents to make (worth of copper).

Ron Jaxon 5 months ago

Amber Hughes

Then all currency should be turned into jewelry then....then what...

Amber Hughes 5 months ago

Heather W

Even if it is illegal where you live, when you're done and the ring is all polished, nobody will be able to tell it ever was a quarter. There are bigger problems for the government to worry about than people making money into jewelry.

Can I melt, drill holes through, or mutilate U.S. coins? Maybe. It is a violation of 18 U.S.C. Β§ 331 to alter a U.S. or foreign coin with the intent to defraud. The United States Mint cannot issue interpretations of criminal statutes such as this, which fall within the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Justice. Furthermore, 31 C.F.R. Part 82 states that no person shall export, melt or treat any 5-cent coin or one-cent coin of the United States. However, there are a few exceptions such as for novelty, amusement, educational, jewelry and similar purposes. Your business should consult with an attorney to ensure it does not run afoul of these laws before melting or mutilating U.S. coins.

Actually you can do anything you want to with money. It's yours after all. When you hear or read the term "defacing money" that refers to changing the face value of money. For example turning a one into a 5 is defacing. So no fear in the Legal issue. It's not illegal.
