In a large bowl, we're going to now mix together the dry ingredients. First the 1 cup flour...

@ Cyn - you probably could use apples but it would be a different taste and texture. Part of what makes this cake so delicious is the berries meld with the batter and ooze around as it bakes so that probably wouldn't happen with apples. I'd chop them into small pieces and maybe use more. But I bet it would still be yummy!
