If you want to lose weight you need to live healthy, eat clean and exercise regularly. Here are some of my top tips to get you fit and healthy to lose weight!

Step 14 of 28

Buy the following - pedometer ( make sure you are doing a minimum of 10000 steps a day). Yes it sounds alot but you will be surprised what a 60 minute walk will do.

Step 15 of 28
When you start exercising remember the scales will lie. Use body measurements or clothing as a judge to see if you are losing weight. Muscle weighs alot more than fat for its size.

If females lift weights & do cardio you will also tone down, get those sexy lines, and lose weight. You will not look like the girl in the red bikini if you lift weight. It's impossible without drugs

The more lean muscle mass we have, the more calories you will burn. This is why for weight loss, lifting weights is very important. Cardio = weight loss. Cardio + weight lifting = faster weight loss

UPDATE: In Sept 2011 my actual weight was 293 (found a pic!!!). As of May 20 I've reached 184! From size 26 to size 12! I still have 34 lbs to my goal but oh my gosh, healthy feels SO amazing!!!

Ty, great info👍 Two years ago I was 195 lbs slowly creeping to 200 lbs. I am only 5'4". I am now 147 lbs. People ask me all the time - how did u do it. I tell them " I woke up one day and realize I did not want to die" The hardest thing is to maintain the weight and get lazy. I have a pair of pants in my closet size 16 (I gave away the size 18) I vowed to myself to never go back to being chubby wubby!! I will continue until I hit my goal weight of 136 lbs. Again, ty👍🌹

I too enjoyed your guide. Very informative but done in a light way. As far as the carbohydrate thing, my body just feels better when I eat lots of protein and veggies. Even to much fruit and I don't feel as well. If I stick with meat, cheese, eggs, salads and veggies, I have more energy, just in a better mood and feel clearer. This is basically The Atkins program with lots more veggies. No I'm not promoting this way of eating, I'm just sharing. I also feel better when I get out and walk. My favorite excuse right now is that it's over 100 degrees here in Phoenix. 😝 and please don't suggest that I wall around an air conditioned Mall. I have found that walking in and out of stores and pulling my credit card out and putting away, then repeating this at many stores, only serves to piss off my husband, but then THAT does the cardio thing for me (my heart certainly races then). Just sayin. Just me t

Hey Natalie, best to google or YouTube, but I'll try my best. 1 start in the top of a push up position, 2 jump you feet in, bringing your knees to chest while your hands are still on the floor, 3 stand to an upright position and jump into the air, raising your arms above your head, 4 come down in a position with you hands on floor and knees at chest, 5 thrust you legs out to finish in a push up position. And repeat :)

I never got back to the question as I thought it would be more attacking. But I just noticed it was a good question. The question of overweight being healthy is all dependent on your BMI and your body shape goals. Body builders if you use BMI as a scale are considered obese, but a person with no muscle mass but healthy can be considered underweight? So it's all based in what's healthy. A person with a good amount of lean muscle mass and low body fat would be best. Carbs are needed to help with brain and proper body function, no carbs = no energy.

Dear Maisy when I responded to your comment I did not realise just how young you are. The reason I did come out strong at you is because I tried very hard to get some real and usefully information from this guy. Instead I got ridiculed by two lady's who so obviously have misunderstood the purpose of my questions. I don't think I should give him a break as you suggest, I think I should pump him for all his knowledges, to benefit all of us.

Karen Larard 6 months ago

Karen Larard

Dear Maisy I'm asking questions regarding weight loss that I find interesting. That you find my questions offensive is strange. Could you please point out how asking about carbohydrate is offensive ? And as you can see in the respond he did not answer and I did not ask again. So dear Maisy let's spend the break together.

Joshua Whitney

Haha I look like the guy on the left if you don't want a photoshopped image I could stand in. Well done guide I appreciate the information as someone who is trying to get there life back in track. Yes Karen Americans do have a warped view of body image they think it completely fine to be over weight. Not slightly over weight but grossly and morbidly. I was one of them and I have friends all over who feel the same way. If we don't do something diabetes will be an epidemic which it's quickly becoming. So you " may live longer " being overweight but what kind of life is it when diabetes takes your eyes and legs. That came out a lot longer then I wanted it to be.

Joshua Whitney 7 months ago

Karen Larard

This was the reason I reacted to the photoshop picture

Karen Larard 9 months ago

Karen Larard

I do realise the problems concerning the epidemic obesity in the western culture. But in my mind we now have a ideal body image that is unhealthy, especial when it concerns the female body. When I se pictures of marilyn Monroe, Brigit Bardot and other beautify women from that time, I just know that to day they would be considered overweighted.

Karen Larard 9 months ago

Karen Larard

Dear Joshua to get back on track. Thank you for the in lightning answers you gave to my questions. I do think this is important information. I would dearly like more detailed information on carbohydrates and what role they play in our metabolism. I do find it interesting that a slight overweight is actually healthy, why have our body image changed?

Oh Karen, you really do need to get a day job and focus on more important things in life!! If the photoshop in this guide is your biggest worry in life right now, you are a very bored person. Ever heard of the saying "if you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all"? People are loving this guide. It's harmless and there are great tips. How about you turn off your computer or phone and go play outside with your kids. Time better spent.

Lauren Pavljuk 9 months ago

Karen Larard

Dear Elizabeth this guide is obviously very important to you, and I'm sorry if I hurt you that was not my intension and I do apologise.

Karen Larard 9 months ago

Elizabeth D

It's only a lie if those results were not possible. He never says this is someone that followed his training or tips, just that these results are possible, which they are. He could have doodled a picture to show what a fat guy looks like, then a skinny guy and everyone would have still understood his point. This is all just semantics at this point.

Elizabeth D 9 months ago

Karen Larard

Dear Elizabeth I don't feel guilty, I'm underweight, and I don't blame anybody. I just don't like to be lied to and using a photoshop picture is lying.

Karen Larard 9 months ago

Elizabeth D

This guide still has good tips in it and helps get people motivated whether he's selling something at the end or not, and if you think this guide is trying to make you feel guilty, it sounds like you already are feeling guilty and are just trying to find someone else to blame.

Now since we are on the topic we have to take a look at what type of body a person has. Are they an ectomorph, endomorph or mesomorph and once we determine that we can suggest the correct amount of carbs/protein/vegs/fruit a person should have daily to reach their goals. I hope this helps clarify our carb debate. Cheers

(author) 9 months ago

Joshua Haswell

Yes there is evidence that a slightly overweight person might outlive a thin underweight person, but there is no proof nore is it suggested that an obese / overweight person will outlive a person who is healthy and at their correct weight/mass for their age and height. And no I'm not referring to BMI, as BMI is not accurate when someone starts to gain lean muscle mass. I have also not mentioned that carbs are bad, as a personal trainer, I suggest my clients to have a balanced diet which is sustainable for their goals. A person who is training and exercising regularly can eat more carbs than someone who is not exercising as they are burning calories. If a person lives a sedentary life with no exercise, limited movement, and intakes excessive amount of carbs all day with every meal they are going to become overweight.

(author) 9 months ago

Joshua Haswell

Yes you are 100% correct in stating that we need carbohydrates. But understanding what are carbohydrates and how the work is what people need to understand. Having a low protein, high carbohydrate diet can lead to obesity and possibly diabetes. Why? Since our body find carbohydrates the 2nd easiest fuel source to metabolize into energy. Someone who is looking to lose weight should consider reducing the amount of carbohydrate / sugar intake so their body can use the excess fat storage as fuel. If you are eating more carbohydrates than is recommended for your body (everyone has a different amount) you body will metabolise the carbs and then use the amount it needs and store the rest as fat, resulting in becoming overweight or putting on unwanted weight.

(author) 9 months ago

Elizabeth D

Why are you so hostile Karen? If you don't like his guide then keep your comments to yourself and make a better one. I think it's a very good guide, I'd love to see yours do better.

Elizabeth D 9 months ago

Karen Larard

Dear Joshua do you know that there are no scientific facts that substantiate the " carbohydrate are bad" theory ? Do you know that we need carbohydrates? Do you know that overweight people live longer than thin people?

Karen Larard 9 months ago

Joshua Haswell

Hey Karen, yes it is a photoshop example, and yes it is a fake picture. But I chose to use said picture to show others who have enjoyed this guide what exercise and healthy eating can achieve. Most pictures I found that I wanted to use were examples of transformation of men with six packs etc. so I wanted to use a picture which could show a more realistic view.

Hey Maxine, if you are now to lifting weights then I would recommend getting a personal trainer to ensure you are correctly lifting. Alternatively you can use all the pin loaded machines at a gym and focus on doing a leg exercise, then a push exercise for your chest and arms and then a pull exercise for your arms and back muscles. Weights are amazing to help lose weight and get that sexy toned body. Where are you located? Our company offers online personal training.

The reason why? Your smaller intestine is where all the fats etc from out diet is absorbed back into our fat cells storing fat or later use as fuel. That's why we usually get fat around out stomach then back, bum, thighs .

Excluding people with physical ailments, losing weight is not rocket science. Just figure out what your maintenance caloric intake is and reduce it. Each person should work out the particulars such as how fast you want to lose while not being dangerous about it. Throw in exercise and smart food choices and voila!

Losing weight: keep reducing calorie intake until you see changes. It's possible to lose weight eating McDonald's every day if you wanted. It just wouldn't be healthy though. At the end of the day, in terms of losing weight all that matters is calories. If you want to look fat, worry about your macronutrients as well. You don't even need cardio except to burn off excess calories and to strengthen your cardiovascular system.

Losing weight can be done. I have an under active thyroid and it is now controlled by medicine. I am 5'3" and 2 years ago I weighed 153 lbs. I now weigh 124 lbs and this was done by cutting carbs, drinking more water and eating fish, chicken and vegetables plus healthy carbs. I use to say I can't lose weight but now know I can and did and have maintained this weight for about 1 1/2 years. I love sweets and if I eat them my weight goes up so I avoid them for the most part. I don't deny myself a taste occasionally. Joshua is right, it's a way of life...not a diet.

Basically when I say it's simple, it's a simple concept and simple thing for someone to change their eating habits from unhealthy fat food, to clean healthy lean food. At the end of the day it's someones own fault if they decide to eat unhealthy then complain that they are overweight and can't lose weight while sitting on the couch watching biggest loser eating ice cream. In weight loss and even muscle building there is no failing as not everyone is genetically they same, it's all about trial and error. If you 'failed' at weightloss it's all about learning from your mistakes, try again, try again and try again until you succeed. I'm in the process of writing a book about healthy eating, the do's and do not, explaining more about body types, and more content which will help thousand understand more about weightloss / weight gain without the constant cycle of all these fad diets or the latest ab machine that comes out ever few months.

The 3 body types; Ectomorph (finds it hard to put on lean muscle and has a very fast metabolism which burns fat easy), endomorph (find gaining weight is very easy, low mass of lean muscle, and metabolism is very slow so stores fat easy) and mesomorph ( has a athletic body, great proportion of lean muslce mass, can burn fat, metabolism is great). So yes since there are different body types, different diets, type of training and more effort/determination/willpower is needed. I also do acknowledge and understand that some people might have eating disorders that can rule their life, but I do take that being a fixable excuse for some, as there could a percentage of people with eating disorders who are just not well informed or trained on how to cook healthy basic meals.

Hey ha2el, yes there are many factors that can contribute to someone's weightloss journey. This guide was purely about giving some inspiration to others that may need it. As a fitness professional, I have people coming to me for advice on a daily basis. The most common factor for weight gain is eating the wrong type or amount of food, followed by a sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical movement. Studies have shown that if a person eats unhealthy (junk food, a lot of carbs, take away, saturated fat fried food, and excessive amounts of calories) and are not exercising they will gain weight. While if you eat healthy (portioned food, correct calorie intake for you body size or goal, a lot of green vegetables, proteins, fruit, and a healthy portion of carbohydrates) you can lose weight. There is also another factor that does play an important role and that is your body type.

I believe it's not as simple as calories in and calories spent. I feel like you should acknowledge that it takes way more determination and effort for some, for whatever reasons. I say this as someone who weighs 51kg and has observed that it seems to be easy for me to control my weight. This is not fair. I'm sick of heavier people being judged as weak willed or doing something horribly wrong so they 'deserve' it. I'm not saying everyone should give up, just that if you acknowledge the inherent unfairness, people would feel validated. When you say it's so simple, you're not necessarily inspiring people, you're also implying that it's equally easy for all and so if you've failed in the past, it's _only_ your own fault. And I believe that is not true.

Hey Jackie, please describe you current body shape, and also the body shape you had while growing up. What could be happening is that you are eating bigger portions than you should. What type o food are you eating? What type of exercise do you currently do?
