How to Handle Hermit Crabs

Pick you hermt crab up by their shell. Try to grab the back or the point of the shell. This way it wont pinch you. Hermit crabs only pinch when they are afraid they are going to fall.

Place the hermit crab on your palm. Hold your hand flat so there is no where to pinch. Hermit crabs rarely pinch unless theyre provoked or scared.

Hermit crabs pinch with their large claw. It can be seen while they are withdrawn into their shell. If you get piched DO NOT run your hand under water. Place your hand in its habitat until it lets go.

When you set your hermit crab down, be careful not to drop it as this can be harmful to them. If they are dropped from more than 2 1/2 feet it can be fatal.

To get you hermit crab to come out of its shell, tilt its shell forward until you see it starting to crawl out a bit.

Once its out you can tilt the shell up to get it to stay out. This way you an get a good look at it.


WARNINGS: Never shake your hermit crab to get it out of the shell. Never drop your hermit crab. Don't handle him too much or it can be harmful.
