How to Grow New Plants From Starter Plants

Step 1 of 11

I used some sprigs pinched from my Apple Mint plant. Yes, I know mint is usually pretty hardy & can even take over your yard, but I don't have a green thumb & it's been a rough summer of bugs & heat

Step 2 of 11

Just pop your sprig/ stem into your container of choice(just like grade school Science class! It all comes back to you! Heehee) Add water. Wait & watch. In a week or two you'll see tiny roots forming.

Step 3 of 11
This guy went too long waiting for me to replant him! YIKES! Kind of dark, but can you see all the roots he grew? Just in a little water! I'll be tugging his lil' fat butt outta there very carefully!

Step 4 of 11
I'm trying this powder to help give my cuttings a little extra edge. They'll need it with me. I've even killed cactus and air plants! :-}

Step 5 of 11
It says " just dip the root in & swirl it around in the powder. Tap off excess." I tried to tap it off. My plant made a piggie of himself! Won't let go! I may have created Apple Mint Godzilla!

Step 6 of 11

Just dip all your little starters in the rooting powder, plant in potting soil, water regularly.

Step 7 of 11
Well...that looks ugly as sin & a little wimpy at the moment, but if they are like any other mint I've grown they'll survive life w/ me as their caregiver too! :)

Step 8 of 11

Finally... I took a chime from an old broken windchime(you can use a ballpoint pen or just your finger. But you want to get down deep in your soil). Make a hole & pour in just a teaspoon of Soil Moist

Step 9 of 11
Step 10 of 11
There's the lil' crystals. Cover well with soil. Repeat in a spot or 2, only if you have a really big container. These, when water is added, expand & hold water in helping keep your plant watered.

We never tried this experiment with a plant stem (we used lima beans), will roots develop if you cut off a sprig of another herb, like basil?
