You're all done with the mixture. Now find a good, out of the way place, preferably close to the problem area, and leave the cup there for a few hours. When you come back you will be AMAZED!

It doesn't matter. Mine went to the bottom too an it still killed a lot of them.

I just did this and I'm wondering if the soap is supposed to float on top of the vinegar? Mine just sunk to the bottom.

@erica try a small glass. Make sure you fill it up about halfway. The soap is key though.

Carolyn's Sugar Free Treats

It's because they're attracted to the sweetness of the apple cider vinegar, and the detergent coats their wings so they can't fly away.

@Denise Thank You!

@james I leave it there for a day or two. You shouldn't need it anymore than that. Just repeat when you notice the problem again. They drown themselves in the liquid (not sure why) so they will not be a problem anymore, unless more get inside.

@Denise Farr Thank you. (Regrettably!) I will have many opportunities to try this recipe. How often do you change the liquid?

James Gross last year

Denise Farr

@james I researched online and tried several methods. This is apparently a common home remedy from long ago. I have been using this method for a few years now and shared with friends who were always amazed that it worked.

@josianne It may! I have only used the apple cider vinegar. I would think it may be less effective because it's smell isn't as pungent. I would love to hear your feedback after you try it!!!

Will plain vinegar work? I didn't have apple cider vinegar but I do have the fruit flies so I'm trying it and in a few hours I'll let you know. :-)

@gustav good point! I had actually just done this and gotten rid of the problem a few days before. Then I had the bright idea to post it here, after the fact lol. Next time I will get a shot and replace this pic.

A photo into that cup would have been interesting to add, just to see the mayhem...
