I just want to add, before I start: my hair NEVER curls. Ever. It's thin and slick and straight. Despite that, this technique works GREAT for me. TRY IT.
Step 2 of 18
Take a shower, or get your hair wet.
Step 3 of 18
Add curling mousse to your damp hair. I use this kind, but I'm sure it doesn't make a difference what kind you use.
Step 4 of 18
I live in HIGH humidity, so I also add anti-frizz serum to my damp hair. But this is probably a good idea wherever you live. And yes, the bottle is on my head.
Step 5 of 18
Wait until your hair is dry, then move on to next step.
Step 6 of 18
Take your simple headband...
Step 7 of 18
And wrap it around your head, hippie-style. Notes: make sure your hair is parted and combed well.
Step 8 of 18
Take about a 1 inch section of hair, starting in the front, and wrap it around the band.
Step 9 of 18
Excuse the crappy video, I'm by myself, and the noise in the background... My 3 year old brother was watching transformers.
Step 10 of 18
That's what it should look like, at this stage!
Step 11 of 18
And that's the basic idea! Keep curling your hair all the way around the band to the back of your head. Make sure to pull them pretty tight (depending on how tight you want your curls).
Step 12 of 18
Also... Make sure to push your "curls" close to each other so you have room for all of your hair.
Step 13 of 18
When you get to the last strand in the back, just wrap it as many times as you can then tuck in the ends into the "roll" of hair you made.
Step 14 of 18
From the back. I laid on the right side so that's why it's a little messed up, but as you can see, it doesn't have to be too perfect!
Step 15 of 18
VOILA!! You're done! Just relax for a couple hours or sleep with your hair this way...
Step 16 of 18
Take out the band just by pulling it back and shaking your hair loose, and revel in your beautiful curls!
Step 17 of 18
I flip my head and hair around and spray it a couple times with pump hairspray, just to set the curls and loosen them up a bit....
Step 18 of 18
... Other than that, this is exactly how my hair came out of the band! Enjoy!
I hate getting up extra early to curl my hair so I Tried this, the first time it didn't work because my hair was to curly but the second time I just did it with wet hair it works really good with wet hair and in the morning it looked like I had curled it all ! This is the best Thanks
I really love this guide!!!!!!!!! Can u guys come check out my guides I've done one on how to make lip gloss and one on how to do a high bun it would mean a lot if u could comment and like it
I gave this a go... I did 2 rows though as my hair is long and thick... When I took them out in the morning I did struggle untangling myself, but once I'd managed that, I had a full head of curls! Too tightly curled for my liking but I slept on the curls the next night and in the morning my hair had fallen into beautiful waves - I got so many compliments! So I think I just need to practice a bit more!!!
Thank you so much for this guide! I've been looking for a way to curl my hair without heat, and this is perfect. It works really well, and I got a lot of compliments the next day :D
I have a question to Samantha. I have curly, medium hair. (Not to short not to long) and do I wrap down the headband until I run out of hair or do I wrap it in the same place?
Who would've thought that so many questions would crop up about this guide. It's pretty straightforward if you use your brain. If you want to find out how it works with your hair length/texture, then just try it out for God's sake! Samantha Voigt does not know how it will work on your hair because she only knows with her own and maybe a few friends' hair. Everyone's hair is different!!!
I tried this and my hair got all tangled in the hair band. My hair got so ratty and messed up because I tried to use this. I ran outta time and had to put my hair in a bun 4 school but the hairband was still in!!! I have to cut out the hairband and parts of my hair...
Samantha, I have seen this since I was a little girl now a mature me. Helpful hint: with dry hair add a stying spray and roll your hair. You can also take strips from an old towel and roll your hair up then tie go to sleep and wake up and have awesome curls that last all day long. I have very hard to curl hair and I use this trick until I found "Wrap Snap & Go" at CVS for about $11. I would not be without them. fyi this works for all types. Smile:)
Hmmm. Idk. I don't mean to start an argument btw I just want others to know that it does work for some. You might wanna ask the author about the way to take it out. Friends?
Love it! I always iron my hair either flat iron or wand and I've been doing it like that for maybe 3 years now but I don't want to burn my hair off anymore rofl awesome guide.
Just tried this last night it works :) but the only thing is the elastic band gives me a slight headache from wearing it to sleep and it also left an elastic mark on my forehead 😢 too. Yikes! But love my curls and my hair never curls either.
for the record, i tried this last night and not only did it work, it worked almost too well. my hair had some very tight curls (i just had to touch up the back of my head with an iron because i slept weird) and it has lasted five hours so far and doesn't look like it will be going flat any time soon...wish i could post a pic, but i assure you it worked. my hair was kind of damp from my shower still and it still worked great. my hair is just past my shoulders.
Hi i recently took step cut and without curle hair its not at all looking good and i need curle hair am afraid of using curler machine because i will get hair fall so it is possible to get curle hair without using any machine?? if yes can you please tell me how to do??
Destiny, you can find it all over the web. I don't think there's really an "original" creator of this hairstyle, and everyone out there is going to have varied instructions and therefore, varied results.
I love this!!! its just that it was not curly in the back only straight and puffy, the rest was great. Who and where can i get the origonal instructions to this hairdo.
I tried this and it turned out absolutely horrific! If you have eveb partially frizzy hair this will not work! I warned you! The curls come out really tight and because you have frizz when you shake them or gently brush them they, just explode and you are left with an afro! Also it helps if you have extremely thick hair, ie extensions otherwise again it will not work!
This is really cool! :) I've heard of it before but didn't have a headband so I could never try it. But then I got some, so I'm trying this tonight! I've always used socks, hahaha
Tried this last night. Slept with it in.. Most curls around my face were great . Toward the back they were loose and frizzy. Pulled it up in a ponytail and I'm still getting compliments. Will try this again! Thanks!
Wonderful! The salon irons usually dry out my hair aftr it's done and I don't like the feeling of all their sprays to keep the curls up. Tried this and the curls stayed for hours and felt soft! Thank you!
I tried this but I came out looking like curly sue, not those big beautiful curls that you have. I have slightly thinner but wavy hair...you have any suggestions?
Brilliant idea! I have fine straight hair and heated curls always drop out; I often make waves though by plaiting my hair and leaving in over night. I can't wait to try this!
This is really cool! I usually put my hair in two braids after I get out of the shower, sleep in it, wake up, an take the braid out and put hairspray in it. I'll try this on Monday for school! And how did you come up with this?
I have natural curly hair and it worked great!! I first straightened my hair and put tons of hair serum then used a rubber head band. Worked great! Thanks for the guide!! 😋 I did wrap my head too because the first time my hair frizzed too much.
I'm so gonna try it, I really hope it works on my hair cus every time I try to curl it, the curls don't last for even half an hour... Really liked the technique.
Mine dries wavy and frizzy naturally, but I still only put it up at 95% dry, and then I leave it in overnight. Still comes out with smooth waves/curls. I put a smoothing serum in when its towel dried though.
@Emma, just use a detangling spray first, you should be fine. Do it on dry hair. My headband was waaaay too tight and left a horrible welt on my forehead, so don't make that mistake either. But my hair looked gorgeous, so I still think it's worth trying.
I'm going to try this tonight! Looks good, I have naturally wavy/ slightly curly hair. But my hair tangles easily and I don't want to have to go through what maddy did 😓
So.. I have a lot of hair, it's pretty slippery and layered and not that long- I had to try three times to get it to all fit and even used two headbands and it feels super loose.. And baggy so I'm not sure this is going to work for me! Any suggestions? Maybe putting it in the headband while its wet or damp? I really wanted this to work! I think as soon as I even try to lay down it will all come down :( at first it seems ok but as the pieces get bigger it gets looser and I run out of headband in the back and pieces start falling out and it's a disaster. Help!
This is great. it's fun, efficient, and beautiful, my hair curls, but for it to do a good job I have to put rollers in the night before, which I don't like. So I'm gonna try this
Its really cute but i just dont see howit would work for my hair. It has never held a curl but i think im gonna try with a straightener and if that dont work then try this. I dont really have enoughtime to retake a shower in the morning so im scared its gonna mess up so imma wait till this weekend and try it and ill tell everyone how it works!:))
Great curls! Bought a wider, softer band for the next time (some of the curls were very tight, especially near my face with the narrow band). Anti-frizz serum is a must with my hair! Thanks for the great how to - would have never thought of it!
Oops ignore last comment was unfinished. I was gonna say I'm getting some of that curling mouse now! Where did u get it? Please look at my guides too and like? Thanks x
Worked for me and I have really long think hair that refuses to curl... I used to have to spend an hour with a curling iron but his works way better! Thx! 😃😃😃
Wow! My hair never curls. I mean never! And I have super bouncy curls. Thank you! The only thing is, when I took them out it got a little messy and parts of my hair look almost frizzy because I had to try to untangle it. Is there an easier way I take it out? I just took it from the front and tried to shake it out. Thanks so much.
Tangled in the band, as you are trying to get it out? I had some trouble too. Just shake it out. It will come out. I'm not sure of your hairs texture or how it behaves, but my waves went back together after I pulled out the band.
Great idea! I'm always looking for an easy way to get waves and curls! Your hair looks beautiful! In fact it looks awesome all wrapped up in the band too! Very Grecian! :)
My hair never holds Curls either, but if I use my thin flat iron to curl my hair, it lasts all day! You should try it :) maybe I'll make a guide for it. Lol you basically just take your hair like your going to straighten it normally, but instead of going straight down, you curl it around once and pull down.. The slower you pull out, the tighter the curl. Works wonders! Much better than a curling iron, and easier to create curls exactly how you want them! :) but if you think flat irons are too damaging, then your guide is perfect!
Hi- my hair gets wavy easy when I do things like that but thats really good tip and would not thought of doing that style also looks cool to wear when it's wrapped like that. Lol!... Thanks!
This worked so good for me. It looked kinda crazy when I first woke up, but i spritzed the too tight curls with a little water and it totally calmed down. Also, my rows around the band did not look as good and orderly as the author's and it still worked good. Thanks Samantha for posting!
Ok this totally worked!! I have long super thick hair though so I waited until my hair was almost dry then I wrapped it up and used a blow drier on it for about 2 min. Left it in to cool and set as I did other things. Around 20-30 min and when i took it out it looked amazing!! Lots of compliments. Thanks!! I tried it wet overnight but it just didnt dry. Oh and btw I used a piece of stretchy lace trim for a headband that was very light and I separated hair into 5 strands to wrap around.
Ha ha your welcome! Hey! When you find such a great idea and there's a minor fault in it, you havta find a way to make things work - not just toss the idea! Don't give up K Bo!!!!
So, I tried it. The curls turned out great, however after accidentally falling asleep with the headband in, I've had a horrible welt on my forehead where it cut off my circulation. I've got a deep mark in my forehead still and it's been a week. Maybe I'm the only dolt who's had this problem, but I just thought I'd warn everyone not to sleep with it in, or do so at your own risk.
Hi thx for the guide - ur hair comes out beautiful! I can't wait to try! I do have a question tho - I know u said to wrap 1 strand around 1x & then wrap it around w the next strand... Do u keep doing that on each side til u get to the back & then wrap the remaining hair from each side around headband til it's all up? I don't know if my question makes any sense to u but I hope it does! Thx again!
Well thank you everyone who liked this guide, and I'm so glad it's worked for so many people! @Tine: I'll have to try fish braiding! Maybe tonight! :) @Erin: thanks for the tip for other hair types!
I saw this on Pinterest a while back, and tried it. Sucked. This snapguide helped clarify some things, and I am happy to say that it looked great. I would add that if you have thick coarse wavy hair already, you should blow dry your top layer smooth before rolling it in the band.
I love this , you saved so many girls hairs!! I've done a lot of searching and experimenting different ways of no heat curls and this is the coolest one I've seen yet. I also love fish braiding my hair into two then when it's completely dry letting it out. But I cut all my hair off so I'll see how this works :) you're gorgeous btw !
My hair is thin and super straight so I'm interested to see how it turns out (I'm currently in the process). If it even has the slightest of waves, I'll be impressed! My hair doesn't hold curl well at all. You are adorable, you have great hair, and this was a well written guide.
@Krystain: I would brush around the curls if you were to brush them at all. Like, use your hand to hold the curl so it kind of wraps around your hand and then brush the hair on your hand. It takes awhile, so I usually forgo it, but if you want the curls really neat, you can.
@Emma: sometimes a couple of my strands get really baggy, I usually try to redo them, but sometimes they just don't want to work. Then I clip them and hope for the best, so you did fine. It's usually better to pull tight though.
@Johnette: I think the curl size depends on how tight you pull the loops. Different sized headbands would probably achieve the same thing, but you can alter your curls by tightening/loosening them.
Ohmygosh! You are amazing! So my hair is exactly like yours... Like I would curl my hair in the morning and i tried different products but after 5 minuets my hair turns straight.. Thank you for this guide it work on my hair and stay through the whole day (:
I do mine with completely dry hair, and I have layers also. But really it's just an experimenting process. You know your hair better than I do and how it works. And to answer your other question, Emma, you only wrap it once then let the excess fall. When you grab the next section you're also grabbing the rest of what you just wrapped. Make sense?
Oh, and yeah! The headband is actually really cute! The lady on the video I originally got it from said she wears it like that all day then sleeps in it THEN takes it out sometimes. So yeah! Rock it!
Just did my hair in the headband, looks great like this! Really 1930s! :) If the curls dont work out, I might just put it in the headband and wear it like that lol!
Also: if it didn't work for you the first time, try doing it again a second time. One of my friends did it and it failed the first time, but it was pretty the second. So don't get discouraged, there might be a slight learning curve.
@ Kirstin: I would say try Karla's idea, but if your hair is like mine, try not conditioning it the night you do this. I do this, and Since my hair is slick anyway, it's generally still pretty, just slightly harder to brush. That gives me a little texture to hold my hair.
Trying this as of right now. My hair is super curly and think and I can never get it to get wavy... Just curly. My hair is also super heavy and it weighs down the band. I used bobby pins to hold my hair on the band. Look up how to insert a bobby pin correctly and from
That so awesome! I love it. My hair looked so pretty.. I've never been able to get nice lose curls like that. Thanks for sharing. I'm gonna pass it slog to all my sisters too :)
No, you don't bun it. Move what you've already curled around the headband over, away from that piece. Then take the piece and wrap it once, twice, however many times it takes to get most of it on there. The remaining pieces can just be tucked into the "roll" you made all around your hair.
@pamela: not long at all, actually, but my hair is really thin. I usually do this on a morning I need to be somewhere especially early, so I can take a shower the night before and still have pretty hair. For me, even if it WOULD take a while, that's worth it anyway.
That totally worked. I'm thrilled bec my hair doesn't take to curls and these look perfectly wavy. I have thick coarse hair that is straight and I did the two headband method. Worked great. Took me ten mins to do up and three hours to set.
@Kellie: I don't know anyone who has tried it with curly hair. I'd say that the anti-frizz serum is a great idea in that case, and then you probably have a couple options. I'm sure you have a routine to keep your hair as manageable as possible, so I think you might be able to work this in somewhere. Maybe try blow drying your hair as straight as possible, then play around with doing this while it's still hot, or waiting till it's cold. Also, there are products for after your hair is curled to keep it "slick" and clean and hold in your curls. I recommend googling tips for keeping pretty curls for people with your hair type. It's just gonna be trial and error!
This is such a great guide! Do you know anyone with naturally curly hair who tried this? My hair is naturally curly, and I fear that leaving it wet at all will end in messy, frizzy curls like I usually get. Does this work for people like me?
Thanks for all the nice comments! Especially the one about my pictures. Remember, I didn't come up with this method, I just figured snap guide needed a guide for it. :)
@Punam: I helped my friend do the same thing to her long and thick hair. Instead, we did two bands that were spaced out into two layers on the back of her head. So we did one band with a top layer and another band with the bottom layer. It worked fine!
No, not really. It really depends on your hair type. Like I said, I live in high humidity, so I wear it. If I didn't live here, I wouldn't have to use it because my hair is pretty fine and doesn't really frizz much. So it depends.
Yes just once and then the strand that's left u let it go and then u do the same thing over and over till ur done I've done it but I'm not the person who dose this thing
