Fishtail Braids are really easy to do, even though they look a little complicated. I often wake up to one of my roommates asking me to "fishtail" them... Maybe now they'll learn themselves :)
Fishtails work best with medium to long hair. Spray the hair with a little hairspray or texturizing product before you start.
Step 2 of 11
Divide the hair into two equal sections.
Step 3 of 11
Grab a small piece of hair from the outside of the left section.
Step 4 of 11
Bring that small section over the top and to the inside of the right section.
Step 5 of 11
Then, do the same thing with the right side. Bring a small piece of hair from the outside over the top and into the left section.
Step 6 of 11
Continue bringing the hair from the outside in, alternating sides.
Step 7 of 11
Every now and then, pull the two sections away from each other to tighten the braid. It doesn't need to look perfect!
Step 8 of 11
Here's a video to help explain.
Step 9 of 11
Tie the pony tail once you get to the bottom. The smaller sections you take while braiding, the cooler the braid will look, but the longer it will take. I took medium sized sections.
Step 10 of 11
I like to pull apart the braid to loosen it up and give it a softer look.
I've tried to do this so many times and need known where to put the crossed over hair!!!! Now, I finally can try to fishtail. I'll do it to one of my friends when they wake up :D thanks!!!
I tried this this morning and found it a lot easier than I ever imagined thanks to your guide!! It's a look that I'm guna have to perfect though lol :)
@kaitlin it is definitely harder to do on your self but keep trying. Try pinning the hair to the side to hold it while you're braiding. Hope this helps!
I don't find them confusing I just can never do one on myself. I lose bits of hair when passing it over and the hair from the other side of my head falls out the braid. Any advice?
Guy! Since I read this guide, I've been doing to my daughter almost all the time. She also likes the waterfall braid but that's a disaster they brings nightmares. Good luck
I'm probably the only dad who does his 6 year old daughters hair every morning. I did this a few days ago and every teacher she has wanted to know how I did it. Thanks Britney.
It looks so easy but when I try it on my own hair I just can't figure out what to do with the small section you bring in the middle of the two bigger sections. Must practice more!
(assume you have hair in left and right hands, with your left holding the braid tight) from your right handed section, let go and grab from under. Wrap hair around the outside &over the top of the strand you just grabbed from behind, and tuck that hair into your left hand. Grab your right section and hold tight near the braid to prevent unravelling& then start the same procedure with your left hand. grab from under/behind the left section& wrap from the outside, over top of the strand and tuck into your right hand. Keep it all tight but it works!!
