How to Fishtail Braid

Fishtail Braids are really easy to do, even though they look a little complicated. I often wake up to one of my roommates asking me to "fishtail" them... Maybe now they'll learn themselves :)

Step 1 of 11
Fishtails work best with medium to long hair. Spray the hair with a little hairspray or texturizing product before you start.

Every now and then, pull the two sections away from each other to tighten the braid. It doesn't need to look perfect!

Step 8 of 11

Here's a video to help explain.

Step 9 of 11
Tie the pony tail once you get to the bottom. The smaller sections you take while braiding, the cooler the braid will look, but the longer it will take. I took medium sized sections.

Step 10 of 11
I like to pull apart the braid to loosen it up and give it a softer look.

Brittney Riley

@kaitlin it is definitely harder to do on your self but keep trying. Try pinning the hair to the side to hold it while you're braiding. Hope this helps!

I don't find them confusing I just can never do one on myself. I lose bits of hair when passing it over and the hair from the other side of my head falls out the braid. Any advice?

Is it possible to do a fishtail braid from the top of the head like a regular braid? Or do you need to begin at the base of the head?

(assume you have hair in left and right hands, with your left holding the braid tight) from your right handed section, let go and grab from under. Wrap hair around the outside &over the top of the strand you just grabbed from behind, and tuck that hair into your left hand. Grab your right section and hold tight near the braid to prevent unravelling& then start the same procedure with your left hand. grab from under/behind the left section& wrap from the outside, over top of the strand and tuck into your right hand. Keep it all tight but it works!!
