Step 1 of 9
This is the prep for a pirouette. Bend both legs into a deep plié and make sure to lift the back heel off of the ground.

Open arms before you close them to gain momentum. When closed, your arms should look like a big beach ball and be opposite of your sternum.

Next you should practice holding a passé on flat or releve. Point your foot above your knee.

I'm a professional contemporary dancer but I trained in Jazz, Modern, and Ballet all through college. These are actually lovely contemporary jazz pirouettes, distinguishable by the parallel positioning of the feet and legs. Nice work ladies! But be sure to keep your hips level and your supporting foot in a full demi-pointe position (pumping the foot or even just keeping it low helps a dancer do more turns but it's not technically correct :) though sometimes fun to do anyway!) In traditional jazz, which has a lot if African dance influence, a fair amount of turns are actually done in plié or even on a flat foot, these can be turned parallel or out, attitude (parallel or out as well), or pretty much anything you can think of as Jazz is traditionally a cultural dance (it developed in clubs, homes, and even as far back as plantations (African Americans passed down traditions from African culture, dancing, druming, and even forms of what Americans today recognize as tap) that later developed technique. Just a fun bit of trivia :)

Haha I was just about to say that, I am a professional ballerina. I work in downtown Cleveland at playhouse square. The turns aren't right. And those were straight leg fouettes commonly known as. Either way though, the knees is to face back and your foot should be turned out.
