Here's how I prepare butternut squash for simple recipes that don't require it to be too seasoned.

Using a spoon remove all the seeds

Slice each half into sections that are 1/4 inch tall

Toss the squash in a bowl and add a few tablespoons of olive oil. Don't forget to add some salt and pepper.

Spread the squash on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake for 20-25 minutes. Every 10 minutes stir and rotate the pan. They will be slightly darker and soft to the bite when done.

Yum! This is great! My hubby & I have been switching every thing over to cut cost ( since our youngest daughter was diagnosed with allergies) one being squash! We have found it just to become to mushy when we cook it! I will have to it this way!

Most ovens don't cook evenly. I find rotating is easier than stirring.

Since this cooks so quickly, and the pieces are so small, I don't really think its necessary to rotate the pan. I usually just stir 2 to 3 times.
