Heather asked for a tutorial for the ripple stitch. It's a popular stitch for baby blankets, afghans and dish clothes. :)

i'm going to show you the first 3 rows (it's just repeating after that) and i also have a diagramm...

that's the diagramm. if you can't read it no worries i'll guide you through :) now let's get started :)

4

i'm going to do a small swatch, not a full sized blanket, therefore i chain 32. (chain 130 to get a good size)

5
Image for Step 5

ok 32 chains. yarn around and insert your hook in the 4th chain from your hook.

6
Image for Step 6

first double crochet made. make 5 more double crochets in the next 5 chains.

7
Image for Step 7

you have your chain 3 and 6 double crochets.

8

now comes a special stitch called double crochet 3 together (dc3tog): i'll show you step by step -->

9
Image for Step 9

start like normal double crochet in the next chain. pull up a loop like you normally would for it. yarn around again and pull through the first 2 loops on you hook.

10
Image for Step 10

leave this stitch unfinished with 2 loops left on the hook. yarn around again and start a new double crochet in the next chain.

11
Image for Step 11

yarn around and pull through the first 2 loops, but leave this stitch unfinished as well.

12
Image for Step 12

and we do this one more time (3 loops on your hook now). yarn around and insert your hook in the next chain, pull up a loop. then pull trough the first 2 loops again.

13
Image for Step 13

ok good. 3 unfinished stitches on the hook (4 loops). now we finish them :) yarn around and pull through ALL loops on the hook.

14
Image for Step 14

tada :) now make 5 more double crochets in the next 5 chains. (no worries if it feels kinda thight, this stitch will be the first ripple point)

15
Image for Step 15

see the ripple coming out already? :) now we make the 2nd special stitch in this pattern: 3 double crochet shell.

16
Image for Step 16

it's actually just an increase. work 3 double crochet in 1 chain. this will be the inwards bent ripple.

17

and 5 double crochet into the next 5 chains again :)

18
Image for Step 18

next repeat the double crochet 3 together again in the next 3 chains.

19
Image for Step 19

there we go... 5 double crochet into the next 5 chains again

20
Image for Step 20

i have one chain left now. if you make a larger size blanket you keep repeating the shell now. at the end of your first row (independently of the size) you will have this one chain left...

21

... we are going to work 2 double crochet into this last chain.

22
Image for Step 22

if you want to change colors, leave the second one of the last 2 double crochets half finished. yarn around the new color and finish the stitch.

23
Image for Step 23

chain 3 and turn your work clockwise. yarn around and work 1 double crochet into the same stitch like your turning chain.

24
Image for Step 24

like this... now work 5 more double crochet in the next 5 stitches.

25
Image for Step 25

work the dc3tog into the next 3 stitches. the one befor the previous dc3tog (pink), the previous dc3tog (yellow) and the one after the previous dc3tog (green).

26
Image for Step 26

then 5 more double crochet into the next 5 stitches.

27
Image for Step 27

the next increase (3 double crochet shell) is worked in the middle double crochet of the previous row (yellow)

28
Image for Step 28

like this... all three into the yellow one :) aaaand... 5 double crochet again... starting at the green pin :)

29
Image for Step 29

and the dc3tog again ;)

30
Image for Step 30

i think you got the idea now, right? 5 more double crochet into the next 5 stitches.

31
Image for Step 31

in this pattern the turning chain counts as a stitch. therefor we will work the last 2 stitches into the 3rd chain. (that's the loop on the far top) (violet pin)

32
Image for Step 32

if you want to change the color again just do like between the 1st and 2nd row. if not: just finish the second double crochet, chain 3, turn and keep working :)

33
Image for Step 33

one double crochet into the same stitch like the turning chain

34
Image for Step 34

5 more double crochet into the next 5 stitches

35
Image for Step 35

double crochet 3 together (dc3tog)

36
Image for Step 36

5 more double crochet into the next 5 stitches

37
Image for Step 37

3 double crochet shell

38
Image for Step 38

5 more double crochet into the next 5 stitches

39
Image for Step 39

double crochet 3 together (dc3tog)

40
Image for Step 40

5 more double crochet into the next 5 stitches

41
Image for Step 41

aaaand... 2 double crochet into the last loop of the turning chain :)

42

repeat row 2 till you reach the lenght you wanted... to fasten off (finishing your work): at the end of the row chain 1, cut your yarn and pull the end through the chain so you get a small knot...

43

... take a yarn needle and weave in the tails. -->

44
Image for Step 44

that's a yarn needle... huge with a big loop the get even big yarn through it :)

45
Image for Step 45

feed the needle through your stitches

46
Image for Step 46

skip one loop and go all the way back. pull yarn a little thight and cut.

47
Image for Step 47

tail hidden :)

48
Image for Step 48

and the whole thing again ;) happy hooking!!!
