Step 1 of 14

In order to hollow out the bulb, please check out my guide titled "How To Hollow Out a Lightbulb"!

Step 2 of 14
This is the largest globe bulb I could find. The frosting doesn't matter because it can easily be rinsed away with cold water.

This is the largest globe bulb I could find. The frosting doesn't matter because it can easily be rinsed away with cold water.

Step 3 of 14

Check with your local aquarium store for a fish that can do well in limited space...ask the store to give you care instructions as well!

Step 4 of 14

Before we fill the bulb with rocks, water, and the fish, we need a stand. To do this, use a solo cup.

Step 5 of 14
We are going to cut out the top of the lid, where the first line is at.

If your edges aren't perfect, don't worry because you will be able to cover up the imperfections with the black tape.

This is what the stand should look like.

Step 10 of 14

Now add the rocks to the bulb after you've rinsed them. After that, fill 3/4 of the bulb with water. Let the water reach room temperature before you place the fish in the bulb!

Step 11 of 14

To get the fish into the bulb, slowly pour the water from the holding container into the bulb. The fish should go easily into the bulb.

Step 12 of 14

NOTE: If the bulb opening is sharp, put tape over the sharp edge while poring so the fish is unharmed. After the fish is successfully in the bulb, peel the tape off.

Step 13 of 14
And there you have it, one happy fish! Again, please check with your local aquarium store for a fish that can do well in limited space.

Put a plant in there for natural filtration and nutrients. This is big enough for a beta, who love enclosed dark places they can hide in. Theyre not big on swimming either. You guys are getting bent outta shape for nothing, this is a great idea and perfect for a beta. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE this guide, it's wonderful.

Obviously people don't know much about betas... They are one of the toughest fish who can survive in small places and can basically take care of themselves. This is a really creative guide!!

How long will the fish live in this tank and what do you feed it?I think my cats would find it fascinating entertainment.

After looking at this popular creative idea i decided to do some research of my own, courtesy of Wikipedia: "The Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens, pron.: /ˈbɛtə/) also known as Betta, (particularly in the US[citation needed]), is a popular species of freshwater aquarium fish. In captivity, male B. splendens are best housed alone[9] since, as their name "fighting fish" implies, they will aggressively attack and kill (or be killed by) another male in their territory. Putting female and male specimens together is not recommended either. Although many retail pet shops market very small "bowls" for B. splendens and the fish can, in fact, survive in a small container for periods of time, for optimum health and vigor larger tanks should be used.[11] Recommended tank volume is 20 to 40 liters (5-10 gallons)." I hope this clears up any conflicts by looking at the facts of the species of fish and its natural habitat.

One tip I've learned to live by is that for each inch of fish you have, one gallon is required. So for a 2-3 inch betta, a 2-3 gallon tank would be optimal.

However, you must accept the fact that bettas are highly adaptable creatures. There are many different species, and the ones in pet stores have lived in small spaces their ENTIRE LIVES. Should your tank have a filter? Probably. Should it have a heater? Not necessarily. If you keep your house in the 70 degree range, that is what a fish tank heater would heat your water to anyway. This lightbulb craft is cute. I have some of my own, just not with fish in them. (my betta lives in a 2.5 gal tank) You have to give this guy credit for the size of the lightbulb, as this is what most pet stores would recommend size-wise. Is this fish surviving in a small bowl? Yeah! He will probably live for 2 years! Is he happy in a small bowl? Probably not the happiest he could be, but it is not abuse. As long as the owner cares about the fish and treats him as a living animal and not decor, this betta has every chance of happiness in this bowl as any other.

Beta fish live in puddles in South America; their natural habitat is very small in general and they are aggressive fish as well so they aren't exactly great with others ( they often kill tank mates; but not saying they all do)

It's creative and at pet shops some tanks are smaller than this

Okay I went on a mini rant in favor of this but it wouldn't post it because it was too long. Long story short. I have a beta. It would be fine in this "tank" I would only suggest the addition of a plastic plant as betas like to hide.

It definitely looks cool... But, why does one require a fish as a pet in the first place. It is pointless. They add no value to your life and you add no value to there's.

If you look at the picture of the lightbulb in his hand you can tell that its huge. The curve of the bulb is making the fish look bigger then it is. Remember it fit easily through the small hole in the bulb... Plus, it's a fish... Don't be so sensitive.

The fish is fine. I've worked with marine life including these fish. His fish is not going to need any more room then it has. I had a fish in a small bowl and it lived for 5 years, until my cats got into a fight and knocked over her bowl while I was away. I understand you think fish=big place to swim. No, take it from someone who knows. His fish is just fine. So be careful if the bulb easily shatters.

That is too small for any fish and it wrong to say that betta's to not need filtration. They do. A quick search shows this. "Betta fish have an organ known as the labyrinth organ which allows them to breathe air at the water's surface. It is often wrongly thought that this organ allows Betta fish to be kept in unmaintained aquaria.[2] This is a misconception as poor water quality makes all tropical fish, including Betta Splendens more susceptible to diseases such as fin rot"

I never meant to make anyone upset or to cause possible harm to the fish. I went to another pet store who said the same thing (that the bulb was more than adequate room for the fish). The bulb is huge, I mean HUGE. The store also said I could add a female after two weeks, but I've decided to put the fish in another container to satisfy everyone.

I agree with Jodi. Pet shops, for whatever reason, do not always know what is best, and sometimes give bad advice to make their sale. Betta fish need at least two gallons to move around in. Upon purchasing my betta, they told me he would be fine in a .5 gallon starter kit they sold me. But he wasn't happy. Fish need room to swim, and that fish can barely turn around. This is animal cruelty.

Jodie Bartholomew Oates

It's an extremely clever idea but one I consider cruel-it has quite upset me. If a shop told me they considered a cupboard adequate space for you would that mean you were happy for me to make you live in there? (with no room, company or stimulus) Fish naturally live in an entire ocean, a tank is not ideal and a lightbulb unacceptable. I think in your heart you will know this is not right if you stop and think. I know you'll come up with some fantastic ideas when you put your imagination and focus into something more positive but please take the poor fish back to the shop, you were ill advised.

Jodie Bartholomew Oates last year

Katrina, I bought a HUGE lightbulb that the pet store said was adequate space. And Kathy, the pet store told me that room temperature water is what the fish prefers.

How do you plan on cleaning the "tank" out?? Also, beta's are tropical fish which means they should have a heated tank!! Just because their not in a heated tank when you buy them doesn't mean its right!! Just sayin!
