How to Cook Sushi Rice

Here's a basic recipe for cooking sushi rice. This is the foundation for many other sushi recipes. I hope you like it.

Gather all of your ingredients

First you need to rinse the rice to remove the starch. You can pour the rice in a glass bowl.

Add a cup of water and start rubbing the rice with your hands.

You'll want to do this 3 or 4 times, draining the water and adding a new cup everytime.

Once rinsed, pour your rice in a rice cooker and add your water. For every cup of rice, add 1 1/2 cups of water. One cup will make 2 servings, aprox.

Turn on the rice cooking pot and let it do its magic.


If you don't have this, you can use a regular pan (large enough to fit your rice and water). Cover it with a lid, and let it cook on low until all water evaporates.

While rice is cooking, mix the vinegar, sugar and salt until dissolved. It helps if you warm this for 15-20 secs ons the microwave or in a pan.

Once the rice is cooked, add your seasoning and mix thoroughly. Goes without saying, but mine came out a little mushy. Since i'm making rolls i don't mind, but i could have cook it a little longer...

2 Cups Calrose rice
4 Tablespoons Rice vinegar
1 Teaspoon Sugar
½ Teaspoons Salt
3 Cups Water (for cooking)
More water (for rinsing)
