I know Romanian is not a Mediterranean country, but we have had Turkish and Greek people here for hundreds of years, so this is how we got to cook wonderful, delicious Mediterranean dishes 😊

I'm loving the guide, this is one of the most popular traditional Romanian dishes. We normally use pork instead of beef or a mixture. If you add tomato paste / sauce to the pan it will be even tastier. What we use in the mince as spices are salt & pepper, garlic and herbs: thyme or parsley work the best! For vegetarians, you can replace the meat filling with nuts, mushrooms, courgettes. As long as you season it properly you won't miss the meat. Good luck to everybody having a go at this recipe! 😊

Aah, definitely going to try the vegetarian version. Maybe even try it with the veggies from my own garden, horse beans and cabbage. Alltough chickpeas are yummu :)

If u don't want to fold them on both sides thats ok. Just roll them. The filling won't fall out :) here's the video of how it's done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0CqYff_RHc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Sure it can. The basic element holding the filling is the rice. Mum used to fill them with rice, chick peas, white kidney beans (soak peas and beans overnight and boil first) and pine nuts all chopped fine (not mashed). Use the same spices. I don't like pine nuts so it's why she doesn't do vege version. She said it's even better than the meat one. We are having a debate about it now. Lol. Let us know how it goes.
