Step 2 of 9

At a later date, I may publish a guide on how to punish your spouse.

Step 3 of 9

Start off by vacuuming or sweeping loose debris from the floor.

Step 5 of 9
Add the water to your bucket first, then mix in the other ingredients. Adding them while the water is running will make a sudsy mess and you can't see your water level.

Step 6 of 9
Start mopping, ensuring that the mop is wrung well and that you are not saturating the floor. The Borax and dish soap cut through grime and the rubbing alcohol will help the water evaporate quickly.

Step 7 of 9

Its a good idea to mop in the same direction of the grain, following the length of the board. Streaks will be less evident this way. Also, depending how dirty the floor is, change the solution often.

Step 8 of 9

This method costs pennies per bucket. Most wood flooring cleaners are alcohol based so that water doesn't penetrate the wood, causing the wood to swell and eventually split.

Step 9 of 9
They gleam again! Most wood flooring manufacturers will void your finish warranty if you don't use their product. I'm sure there are very good profit margins at $12+ per bottle plus the applicator!

What about ceramic tile? I mop twice a week with a Hoover floor mate and I always amazed at how dirty the water is. (5 people and 3 small dogs). It kills my back and leaves me exhausted.

Sam, I'm unfamiliar with the term metho. Is that alcohol based, ie. methyl? If so, it will work by allowing the moisture to evaporate quickly off the wood.

Sam Edwards

Can I use metho instead of rubbing alcohol?

I finally tried this out, and I just can't get over how much better my floors look, compared to the expensive solution I was using. Works super on laminate! Thanks so much for the guide!

@ Brown, you are very kind

@ Janice, yes the floors are real wood and I wouldn't hesitate to use this solution on laminate (just wring the mop well). It would take a lot of water to do damage to a laminate floor ie. a puddle sitting on the joint of the locking system for several hours.

Janice Wells

Would this work on laminate flooring? It looks like yours but it's laminate not wood. I was told to use their cleaner in a spray bottle and was told not to allow water to stay on it or it would be ruined. It takes forever to get on my hands and knees to spot clean it. Your floors are probably real wood. They look beautiful!

Ok I can tell I need to go buy some Borax! Funny how those great cleaners that our grandmothers swore by went by the wayside with commercial products entering the market! I love your ideas and I'm always looking for great quick ways to clean my house!

Lmbo!!! When my husband has gone a wee bit too far with me, it's either silent treatment or I tell him he belongs in the dog house! In over 27 yrs of marriage, we have never, not once slept apart. I seriously kid you not, there was only ONE big argument we had during our children's teen years, moons ago... That was the LAST EVER argument we had about ANYTHING. Communication is KEY. Every year he will go with the guys (about 10-13 of them) to Watkins Glens and camp out for a week. I myself go out for a week. It's great for the marriage, the mind, body & soul! But all in all, can't wait to see the humorous guide on 'punishing' husbands. (in good fun of course!) so sadly there are women who are abusive to their spouse and vis-verse... Deplorable and despicable.

Bina, Borax is sodium borate and is usually found where the laundry detergent section is at places like Walmart. It's also a great additive for deodorizing laundry.
