How to Change Engine Oil in Your Royal Enfield Std 350
How to Change Engine Oil in Your Royal Enfield Std 350
General maintenance guide for changing engine oil and oil filter on a Royal Enfield STD 350 Bullet.
Remove the oil cap
Check level and oil consistency
If oil is too dark with lot of slug you can choose to change oil or you can change oil every 2500Km
Keep a tray under the engine to collect oil
Remove or loosen this nut ( oil feed plug )
Use a 21mm spanner and rotate anti clock wise
You can decide to leave it loose instead of removing it
I choose to remove and clean thoroughly
Under the engine there will be two strainer plug bolts. In some older models this could be on the right side. 18mm spanner would be required
Second strainer plug bolt
In my case the second strainer is on the right side
Oil will start draining out as soon as you remove the strainer plug bolts at the bottom or side.
Press the decompressor
And pump the kick start lever to get as much as old oil out as you can
Remove the oil filter cap nut
In some older models as mine the oil filter can have a through stud
Remove the entire filter assembly
Now you can see the old oil filter stuck on to the walls of the filter container
Use a screw driver or finger to pull it out
There comes the old dirty filter
Pull it out
Some people decide to clean and reuse.
You can choose to take a tea break and leave the motorcycle as is now so all the oil drains out. 10 - 15 mins break would be sufficient
Clean engine and all other nuts bolts etc.
I go for a new oil filter, it is only 21 INR ~ 0.38 USD. ( But I like some people's thought on recycling stuff )
Push in the new oil filter
Push it through
It should be seated like this
Close the removed, cleaned bolt
Tighten the bolt using a 21mm spanner and rotating clockwise
Reassemble the oil filter assembly
Tighten with 16mm spanner rotating clockwise
Close the strainer plug bolts. 18mm spanner required
This is an old model motorcycle which has a nut at the backend of the oil filter assembly tighten that as well if you have this
Close the bottom strainer plug bolts. 18mm spanner again
Cleaned and tightened bottom strainer bolt
Now we are ready to pour new oil
Use any brand SAE 20W50 oil approx 1.5 Litres
Use a funnel for avoiding spillage and easy fluid flow into the engine
Pour in slowly
Clean dip stick and then dip until cap sits tight.
Remove and check oil level, top up if required. You should be within the HI ~ LO mark, in some newer motorcycles there is a knurled pattern on the dip stick. Level should not exceed pattern.
Close lid and tighten
Check all nuts and bolts for tightness. In this case you do not need to go for a test drive. But if you wish to, wear a helmet. No matter how small the spin is.
