Then please check with the locals if they are "marron" - which is the French word for real chestnut (eatable). In Denmark we have only horse chestnut and they look like what you found

Yes, and if you find som that are ripe (I.e. on the ground you'll be able to pick out the most amazing shining mahogany brown nut. So now you must decide if your Snapguide should be "how to make a chestnut family with nuts and toothpicks" or "how to grow a chestnut tree". I'm looking forward to seeing the result ;-)
